Formatt HD Filters

With a dedication to the high definition market, Formatt Filters has developed five new filters specifically geared to those shooting in HD -- HD Clear Soft Effects filters, HD Neutral Density filters, Clear UV HD filters and Circular Polarizer Filters. Both amateur and professional videographers, alike, can benefit from Formatt's revolutionary filter technology and use it to their advantage to take their filming and creative HD freedom to new levels.

Formatt's new generation of glass filters offers unparalleled standards in design and performance. The finest materials together with state of the art production techniques have resulted in a standard of optical perfection unmatched anywhere else. All Formatt filters are manufactured using Schott B270 Super White® optical lens glass that is precision polished and ground to ensure absolute optical flatness and optimum performance. Each filter is guaranteed flatness to a maximum 2 to 3 wave value and comes with an individual reading from a laser interferometer. Every filter is carefully verified with a densitometer and spectrophotometer to ensure consistent and accurate transmission before leaving the factory, resulting in an absolute purity of image that eliminates any unwanted colorcast caused by conventional greenish soda-lime glass.

Polarizer

Formatt 138mm Round Linear Polarizer and HD Circular Polarizer Filters

Linear Polarizer: The linear polarizer is the standard polarizing filter, and is an essential outside all-purpose filter. It deepens skies and minimizes reflections. It is typically rotated to achieve the required effect.

Circular Polarizer: The circular polarizer produces the same effect as a linear polarizer, but is used in cameras where polarizing elements are used in the beam-splitters of the camera. If using a linear polarizer with such cameras, the light can become cross polarized (giving the same effect as using two polarizers together). Circular polarizers are made from a different polarizing material than linear and will usually prevent the cross polarization.

The Formatt HD Circular Polarizer is made with the Formatt A.C.T. methodology with a polarizing polymer sandwiched between two layers of Schott B270 Super White Crown Optical Glass. The same processes used on larger Formatt square filters is also applied to Formatt round filters as well. Formatt uses the only the highest grade UV and Polarizing Polymers available, and inserting the polymer between two layers of glass allows the user to clean the filter as often as required and without damaging the protective layer. This is especially important with the popular 1/3 inch chip for HD as well as when shooting wide-angles or in large light areas, where every speck of dirt or smear will be extremely visible.

By incorporating a truly advanced polarizing material with their optically pure water white glass, the Formatt Circular Polarizer delivers a reassurance you can depend on for your most demanding scenes.

Formatt 138mm Round HD Clear UV Filter

The Formatt Clear UV HD filter is a cleverly designed, optically clear filter which absorbs potentially damaging high energy UV light below 410 nanometers. It is also made with the standard Formatt A.C.T. methodology with a UV absorbent polymer sandwiched between two layers of Schott B270 Super White Crown Optical Glass. The Clear UV HD filter is intended to be used as an optical flat protection filter and is designed to protect the lens from physical damage while maintaining optical neutrality. This allows the user to choose color effects from other filters without having to endure the traditional coloration found in 1A and 2B UV filters. The high levels of transmission of this filter make it ideal for use in low light situations.

Protect your valuable lens investment with the Formatt 138mm HD Clear UV Filter.

The economical Formatt 138mm Clear Standard Optical Flat UV Filter is also available.

Formatt Neutral Density Filters

Formatt Neutral Density Filters Neutral Density filters are by definition colorless and uniformly reduce light of all wavelengths with no effect on the color rendition. Used in numerous applications Formatt Neutral Density filters help extend the exposure parameters and can be used in both color and black and white photography.

Standard densities: 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2

Formatt HD Neutral Density Filters have been specially formulated as a result of extensive research into new applications for molecular A.C.T. dyes. The filters give more of a neutral grey without the specular effects from the particulate coatings of the current neutral density and neutral density graduated filters, which allows the user more precise control. While Formatt HD Neutral Density filters are a new range, they have the same densities and light stops as the Kodak Wratten Standards.

Formatt's new Neutral Density Filters are a response to the many DPs and cinematographers who find that it is important to shoot as wide open as possible to minimize depth of field, especially with HD. In response to the professional demand for an optically correct and pristine neutral density filter for HD, Formatt designed its HD Neutral Density Filters, which are the ultimate solution to enhance color contrast and are ideal for normal light reduction.

Formatt HD Clear Soft Effects Filters

Formatt HD Soft Effects Filters

Bottom Left: HD Clear Soft Effects #2
Bottom Right: HD Clear Soft Effects #3

Formatt HD/DV Soft Effect Filters are designed to soften the harsh outlines which can result from high definition work, but with minimal loss of detail and contrast. Formatt Soft Effects filters are manufactured using a revolutionary process that essentially creates an optical distortion throughout the filter. This clean distortion is the result of strategically placed optical dots within the filter surface, which creates an even softening of the object that is quite pleasing to the eye. The filters use a series of small Plano-convex lenses mounted within a specially developed matrix, which in turn is sandwiched between highly polished sheets of Schott B270 Super White optical lens glass.

Formatt HD soft filters are designed to allow the light to pass through for the most part undisturbed; however, a small part of the surface area of the filter has a series of very small lenses on it. The enhanced small radius of these lenses helps produce a controlled spherical aberration, avoiding the risk of secondary focus at short focal lengths, as may happen with other so called "soft" filters. The small lenses are distributed within the filter area in a stochastic pattern, eliminating the danger of moiré fringing even in difficult conditions such as sunlit water surfaces. This is extremely important when using today's moiré sensitive digital chips.

Formatt 138mm HD Clear Soft Effects Filters #1, #2 and #3 are available from Video Direct, with Soft Effects #3 producing the greatest softening effect and Soft Effects #1 producing the least softening effect.

Ideal for portrait or scenic, Formatt Skin Tone Enhancer Filters, also kown as Warm Tone Enhancer Filters, are designed to improve pale skin tones by adding warmth. They are also perfect for shooting outdoors, foliage, earthtones, woodwork etc on a cloudy day or in shade on a sunny day. A warmer alternative to UV filters, Formatt Skin Tone Enhancer Filters absorb the blue cast caused by some light sources, such as overcast skies or shadows on sunny days. They are ideal for using in combination with another filter.

Formatt 138mm Round Skin Tone Enhancer Filters #1, #2 and #3 are available from Video Direct, with Skin Tone Enhancer #3 producing the greatest warming effect and Skin Tone Enhancer #1 producing the least warming effect.

Formatt UV Absorbing Filters

Formatt UV Sky 1A Filter
UV Sky 1A

To help deal with diverse conditions of ultra-violet haze, fog and mist, remember that although you see only white light, both black and white and color films are sensitive to UV light. You must remove the UV light otherwise this can produce unacceptable color casts. You can achieve this by using one of Formatt's ultra effective UV absorbing filters. Although there are many types of UV filters available, depending on the level of filtration required, the UV Haze 2b and the UV Sky 1A are the most popular and offer extremely effective UV absorption.

Sky 1a - This has a slightly pink tint and reduces blue casts in open shade, minimizing the amount of UV light. It is very useful in shooting outdoors in shady areas and on overcast days. UV Absorption: 45.5%

UV 2a - This is a much stronger filter than the Sky 1a and is often used in areas where UV light is more prevalent, such as when shooting in high altitude or for water scenes. It absorbs virtually all UV light.

UV 2b - This is another stronger filter which is particularly successful in absorbing UV under clear sky conditions. Slight yellow tint. It reduces blue casts.

Formatt Supermist Filters

Supermist and Black Supermist

Designed for the demands of the motion picture and broadcast industry, the Supermist filter is the ultimate softening tool for creating a mood outdoors or indoors. Unlike conventional diffusing filters there is little loss of detail. Formatt Supermist Filters provide 8 levels of softening, with available densities from 1/8 (least softening effect) to 5 (greatest softening effect). Depending on the strength chosen they subtly or dramatically enhance a scene without reducing resolution.

In broad scenic or portrait, the Supermist is excellent for toning down excessive sharpness and reducing contrast by moderately lightening shadow areas without detracting from the overall image. Clear Supermist amplifies highlights but slightly reduce contrasts. Black Supermist reduces highlights without affecting contrasts. Warm Supermist combines the classic Supermist with Formatt's unique warm tone enhancer, adding natural warmth. This is useful in outdoor open shade situations where there is excessive blue in the image and total control over lighting may not be possible.

Formatt Graduated Color Effect Filters

Color graduated filters are among the most popular filters. There are three blends of Formatt graduated filters available. Soft edge filters are generally used with standard and wide-angle lenses when a smooth transition of color to clear is required.

Formatt Sunrise and Sunset Filters

One of the most common uses of graduated filters is to create or enhance sunrises and sunsets. A complete range of graduated color filters is available for these purposes.

Sunset Grad
The Sunset filter is available in three densities: Sunset 1,Sunset 2 and Sunset 3. It provides a multi layered effect with a red sky blending down into orange and then yellow, with the bottom of the filter clear. Dramatic sunset effects can be created even using the lightest version of the filter.
Skyfire Grad
This provides a more dramatic version of the sunset filter effect with deeper colors. This is a very intense filter, designed to create a more spectacular image than the standard sunset filter. The Skyfire filter is available in three densities: Skyfire #1, Skyfire #2 and Skyfire #3.
Autumn Grad
This filter blends tobacco brown into yellow, enhancing the colors of Autumn foliage. It is also a good alternative to the sunset filter, providing a more subdued effect. It is available in three densities: Autumn #1, Autumn #2 and Autumn #3.
Twilight Grad
This provides a cooler bluer image ideally suited to creating a late afternoon/early evening twilight effect. It has a darkish blue top which blends into a pinkish horizon. It is available in densities Twilight #1, Twilight #2 and Twilight #3.
Tuscany Pink Grad
This filter provides a "red sky at night" effect with its rosy pink tones enhancing the sunset. Available in densities Tuscany Pink #1, Tuscany Pink #2 and Tuscany Pink #3
