The top of Manfrotto's range of center ball heads, the 490 Maxi Ball Head is manufactured in die-cast aluminum with a precision phenol resin ball. The 490's features make it versatile and ideal for digital and traditional photographic equipment from 35mm to 20x25cm format up to 26.5 pounds in weight. The 490 features separate locks on its 360-degree pan and plus 90-degree/minus 90-degree tilt movements, with an additional friction control on the ball movement to give just the right resistance and smoothness with minimum effort, even with varying weight of equipment on board.

The Manfrotto 490 Maxi Ball Head attaches to the camera via a 50mm platform with an ingeniously combined 1/4-20" and 3/8" male thread. Head to tripod attachment is 3/8" female.

RC4 Quick Release Camera Plate System With Secondary Security Lock

The 490 is equipped with a 3274 quick release camera plate system. This heavy-duty plate also features a secondary security lock so you can't accidentally release the plate (and camera). The lock stops the quick release lever from opening fully. The 3274 quick release plate system offers a broader footprint ensuring a large stable point of contact between camera and plate, which improves stability with larger heavier camera equipment. The sliding screw adapts to the precise configuration of the camera.

Double Groove For Plus 90-Degree/Minus 90-Degree Tilt

The double 90-degree groove (one on each side of the head) means switching from landscape to portrait is convenient however you're set up.

Independent Ball Lock and Pan Lock

The 490 features an indexed ratchet lever for pan lock and a separate knob for ball lock. A separate lock on the panoramic axis allows for rotation adjustment or panning to be carried out without losing framing.

Repositionable Ratchet on Pan Lock Lever

A repositionable ratchet means that the locking lever's action will never be blocked either open or closed by interference with the camera body, tripod shoulder, etc. Simply pull the lever outwards and it's free to be positioned more comfortably without affecting the locking mehanism. Then you can continue tightening or loosening the knob.
