Metz 44 MZ-2

Ideal for digital cameras, the versatile and powerful 44MZ-2 is a compact flash unit that can be operated in TTL, automatic and manual flash mode. Used in connection with the SCA-3002 adapter system, the 44 MZ-2 will work with almost any SLR camera. The tried and tested SCA adapter system makes it compatible with virtually any analog SLR camera as well as with Canon, Minolta, Nikon, Olympus and Sony digital cameras.

This powerful -- GN 144 (ft) -- compact motor-zoom model can be used in either TTL, automatic or manual flash mode, and features a number of interesting special functions including fill-in flash in daylight to brighten up very dense shadows. Synchronization with the second shutter curtain is valuable for faithful rendering of effects. Other functions include (when they are supported by the camera): ADI flash control and multi-zone flash metering (Minolta Dimage 5 and Dimage 7), matrix-controlled fill-in flash and under-exposure indication by way of aperture values (Nikon), measuring flash function (Leica), TTL preflash (Contax), contrast control and spot-beam mode (Pentax).

Metz mecablitz 44 MZ-2 Flash Key Features

Standard Foot 301 Included
The Metz mecablitz 44 MZ-2 comes fitted with the SCA 301 standard foot for simple flash synchronization with all cameras that feature a standard hot shoe. The shutter speed must be the same or slower than the flash sync speed.
TTL Flash Mode
TTL flash mode is a very simple way to achieve excellent flash shots. You need not worry about setting the flash, the camera's electronic system automatically determines the correct amount of flash light required. Exposure readings are taken by a sensor built into the camera which measures the light reaching the film or imager through the camera lens (TTL). An electronic control circuit within the camera transmits a stop signal to the mecablitz as soon as the correct amount of light has been produced. The obvious advantage of TTL flash mode is that all factors influencing correct exposure (filters, change of aperture and focal length with zoom lenses, extensions for close-ups, etc.) are automatically taken into account.

TTL flash mode is available with cameras supporting this mode. The mecablitz 44 MZ-2 must be fitted with a suitable SCA adapter for the camera in use. Metz SCA 3002 System adapters offer additional flash functions as well (sse below).

Automatic Flash Mode
A photo-sensor measures the light reflected by the subject and ends the light output as soon as the subject has been correctly lit.
Manual Flash Mode
Full light output and 8 partial light output levels available.
Automatic Zoom Reflector
The integrated zoom reflector guarantees optimal light output within 28-105mm focal length. The focal length can even be reduced down to 20mm with an optional wide-angle diffuser. If the 44 MZ-2 is fitted with the appropriate adapter of the SCA 3002 system and is used with a camera that transmits lens focal length data to the flash unit, the zoom reflector position of the mecablitz is automatically adjusted to the focal length of the lens in use. The LCD display then indicates Auto Zoom and the zoom reflector setting (mm). The zoom position can also be set manually.
Pivoting Reflector For Indirect Flash Lighting
The zoom reflector can be swivelled upwards into four locking positions for bounce flashes: -7°, 60°, 75° and 90°.
Twelve Telecomputer Automatic Apertures
f/1, f/1.4, f/2, f/2.8, f/4, f/5.6, f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32, f/45
LCD Display
Auto Off
To save battery power and prevent inadvertent battery discharge, the mecablitz is factory-set to automatically switch to standby mode (Auto-OFF), while the flash-ready light and the indications on the LC display are extinguished, approx. 3 minutes after:
  • switch-on
  • triggering a flash
  • touching the shutter release (only with SCA 3002 system adapters)
  • switching off the camera’s exposure metering system (only with SCA 3002 system adapters)

After automatic switch-off the last-used settings are retained and instantly available when the flash unit is switched on again. The flash unit is reactivated merely by depressing the Mode or Zoom keys or by touching the camera's shutter release. The Auto-OFF function can be deactivated whenever required.

Correct Exposure Indication
In auto flash mode the "o.k." correct exposure confirmation briefly lights up on the 44 MZ-2 when the picture was correctly exposed.
Metz SCA 3002 Adapter System Compatibility
Various flash functions are available when the mecablitz 44 MZ-2 is operated with an SCA adapter of the SCA 3002 system. The availability of the individual flash functions, however, depends on the given camera system (camera manufacturer), the specific camera type and the SCA adapter.
