12.1 Megapixels
The PowerShot A650 IS features the same 1/1.7-inch CCD image sensor found on the G9. Larger than the CCDs found on other A series cameras, this helps enable its ground-breaking 12.1-megapixel resolution for this line. The PowerShot A650 IS digital camera captures 4000 x 3000 pixel images with exceptional detail and color fidelity. Combined with Canon's DIGIC III Image Processor, the A650 IS creates tremendous image files that can be printed poster-size.
Canon PowerShot A650 IS
6x Optical/4x Digital/24x Combined Zoom
The PowerShot A650 IS digital camera is equipped with a 6x 35-210mm (35mm format equivalent) optical zoom lens with Canon optics for sharp images. With its 12.1 megapixel CCD and 6x optical zoom lens, you can capture intricate details. The optical zoom combines with a 4x digital zoom for a total of 24x zoom power.

Canon's heritage as an imaging company dates back over 70 years to the company's founding in 1934. Since then, Canon has worked hard to perfect the process of creating extremely high-quality optics for its line of imaging products and is now the world's largest manufacturer of cameras and lenses. Canon is a global leader in optical design, with many advanced and original technologies that allow Canon users to achieve the sharpest images possible.

Optical Image Stabilization (OIS)
The extended zoom range of this camera makes optical image stabilization (OIS) essential. Canon's lens shift OIS provides an effective antidote to camera shake, particularly at longer zoom lengths or during long exposures when even the slightest hand-held shake is magnified to picture-blurring proportions. Superior to electronic image stabilization systems that simply use software to mask movement, OIS actually shifts the lens proportionately to compensate for unwanted motion, making it easier to snap great images. The OIS found in Canon PowerShot digital cameras is based on technology developed for Canon's renowned high-end professional EOS SLR cameras.
Canon A650 IS
2.5" Vari-Angle LCD Monitor and Optical Viewfinder
Whether it is raising your camera above your head to get a shot of your child at her first dance recital or dropping your camera below your knees to watch your baby crawl for the first time, the large 2.5-inch vari-angle LCD screen increases the ability to get those hard to view, but essential shots. The Vari-Angle LCD screen swings out (as is common on video cameras) permitting the user to compose shots including self-portraits without having to twist and maneuver into uncomfortable positions. By positioning the vari-angle LCD monitor appropriately, the user is free to compose shots, even self portraits, without having to move or twist into uncomfortable positions. The PowerShot A650 IS also features an optical, eye-level viewfinder, giving users the choice of viewing their subject on the monitor or through the viewfinder.
Advanced Face Detection AF/AE/FE Technology and Red-Eye Correction
With Canon's new Face Detection AF/AE/FE function, the camera can detect, lock on, and track multiple human faces in a scene. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects faces (based on Canon's Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus, exposure and flash to help ensure the best possible results for even easier picture taking moments. The result is flattering portraits and group shots where all of the subjects are in clearer focus and accurately exposed.

Compared to previous Canon cameras with Face Detection technology, the PowerShot A650 IS IS digital camera adds several improvements, including the ability to use the function for movies as well as still images, the ability to detect faces that are further away or not aimed directly at the camera, and better control of flash exposure. Working with the camera's Face Detection technology, Canon's new Red-eye Correction feature helps detect and corrects, during playback mode, that bothersome by-product of flash photography. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen to help vanquish red-eye, once and for all. Because most images will no longer require laborious post-processing with a computer, the in-camera Red-eye Correction feature is ideal for direct printing.

Canon DIGIC III Image Processor
DIGIC III Image Processor
The brain behind this beauty is DIGIC III, the newest iteration of Canon's ultra-efficient (and proprietary) image processor. Canon's exclusive DIGIC III Image Processor builds on the technological superiority of DIGIC and DIGIC II, taking image quality, performance and speed to new levels. It is the DIGIC III chip that accounts for the PowerShot A650 IS camera's higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times; improved maximum processing speed; and of course, enhanced image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.

Canon developed the proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) Image Processor specifically for use with its line of digital cameras. The technology combines the jobs of image processing and camera function control into one chip. Because it was specifically designed for use in digital cameras, it is also capable of handling JPEG compression/expansion; memory card control; LCD/Video control and processing; gain control (control of CCD signal amplification); Auto Exposure; Auto Focus; Auto White Balance control and most other functions of the camera. The result is a product that offers faster and more powerful auto focus than ever before, faster image processing, better image quality and longer battery life.

SD/SDHC-Compatible
The Canon PowerShot A650 IS uses the incredibly tiny SD memory cards. Get expanded capacity and high-speed writing from a memory card the size of a postage stamp. As an added convenience, the A650 IS also accommodates MultiMedia MMC and MMC+ memory cards, as well as standard SD memory cards and the new, high-capacity SDHC memory cards. This way, you do not have to carry around multiple memory cards in order to be able to continue to save those special moments during extended vacations or high-photo-taking adventures. Canon PowerShot owners can travel in sleek style.
ISO 1600 Sensitivity and Auto ISO Shift
Thanks to the DIGIC III chip's more aggressive noise reduction, the A650 IS is able to shoot at ISO equivalent speed ratings from 80 to as high as 1600. This increased sensitivity at the top-end allows users to select faster shutter speeds, adding additional stability and reducing the danger of camera shake and subject blur during hand held, low-light photography. What's more, the A650 IS digital camera offers users the option of Canon's new Auto ISO Shift feature which, at the touch of a button, can accurately increase the ISO up to 800, further offsetting camera shake due to low-light or unsteady shooting conditions.
Print/Share Button
Located on the backside of the PowerShot A650 IS digital camera is the Print/Share button. This button simplifies and accelerates direct printing to compatible Canon and PictBridge-enabled printers and one-touch image transfer to Windows XP, Me, 2000, and 98 computers for use with image processing programs, uploading to the Internet, or as e-mail attachments. When the camera is connected to a compatible printer or computer, the Print/Share button illuminates to let the user know to press the Print/Share button to begin the printing or downloading process.
21 Shooting Modes, Including Aperture and Shutter Priority
The Canon A650 IS offers a wide variety of shooting modes to optimize the camera's performance based on user preferences or shooting conditions. These modes include:
  • Auto - The camera chooses all the settings so you can concentrate on your subject.

Direct Printing
Direct Printing significantly expands the appeal of the PowerShot A650 IS digital camera by making it simple, quick and convenient to produce high-quality photos without the need for a personal computer. Beyond its Direct Print capability with Canon's Card Photo Printers and acclaimed Canon Direct Photo Printers, the camera is also compatible with PictBridge, an industry protocol that offers the flexibility of direct printing to other brands of PictBridge compatible printers.

The PowerShot A650 IS digital camera supports Exif Print, a worldwide standard that transfers important camera settings and data from the camera to the printer ensuring the photos you print will look true to life. Moreover, DPOF 1.1 (Digital Print Order Format) lets users specify the images to be printed or execute batch printing of selected images.

Canon's Direct Print options -- in conjunction with Canon CP-type printers -- permit creation of passport style ID prints on 4x6 paper as well various print sizes (selectable on the PowerShot A650 IS's menu). Direct Print also offers users the opportunity to print thumbnail frame sequences from movie clips generated in the camera and output to a Canon CP Printer. The camera's Postcard Date Imprint mode provides a user selectable date stamp that can be imprinted in the corner of a picture, similar to those found on 35mm "QD"(Quartz Date) cameras. When selected, the Postcard mode also deliberately crops the image creating a slightly longer rectangle to fill a 4 x 6 postcard. When shooting in Postcard mode the camera automatically reduces the resolution to 1600 x 1200 with fine compression (an ideal setting for 4 x 6 images with no need for the user to manually set the resolution and compression).

Direct Transfer
Canon's Direct Transfer function offers users five options to download images to Windows computers covering everything from all images in the camera, all new images in the camera, user-selected individual images, images selected for batch printing and even a setting to create Windows Wallpaper from an image.
