The SD870 IS Digital ELPH features a retractable 3.8x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal length of up to 28-105mm, making it ideally suitable for a wide range of photographic applications from landscapes and snapshots to portraits and macro at a working distance as close as 1.2 inches from the subject. The 4x digital zoom extends the zoom range to 15x when combined with the 3.8x optical zoom.

Canon's heritage as an imaging company dates back over 70 years to the company's founding in 1934. Since then, Canon has worked hard to perfect the process of creating extremely high-quality optics for its line of imaging products and is now the world's largest manufacturer of cameras and lenses. Canon is a global leader in optical design, with many advanced and original technologies that allow Canon users to achieve the sharpest images possible.

Optical Image Stabilizer
Canon's sophisticated Optical Image Stabilizer technology uses miniature gyroscopic sensors to detect motion and generate a corrective signal. An image stabilizing lens group along the optical axis is shifted in response to the detected motion, providing effective cancellation of unwanted lens movement and vibration. The benefits are obvious and enormous: in still photography, the camera can now be handheld at slower shutter speeds without resulting in blurred images. Handheld video footage is smoother -- free of the unsteadiness that can make viewing home movies tiresome.

The PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH's Lens-Shift type optical image stabilization system is based on advancements made in the development of Canon's EF lenses and video lenses. Unlike electronic or digital image stabilization systems that typically degrade image quality, the PowerShot SD870 IS digital camera's lens shift-type preserves maximum optical performance.

Canon DIGIC III Image Processor
DIGIC III Image Processor
The brain behind this beauty is DIGIC III, the newest iteration of Canon's ultra-efficient (and proprietary) image processor. Canon's exclusive DIGIC III Image Processor builds on the technological superiority of DIGIC and DIGIC II, taking image quality, performance and speed to new levels. It is the DIGIC III chip that accounts for the PowerShot SD870 IS camera's higher performance levels including faster start up, autofocus and shutter response times; improved maximum processing speed; and of course, enhanced image quality and more efficient power consumption; resulting in extended battery life under typical shooting conditions.

Canon developed the proprietary DIGIC (Digital Imaging Integrated Circuit) Image Processor specifically for use with its line of digital cameras. The technology combines the jobs of image processing and camera function control into one chip. Because it was specifically designed for use in digital cameras, it is also capable of handling JPEG compression/expansion; memory card control; LCD/Video control and processing; gain control (control of CCD signal amplification); Auto Exposure; Auto Focus; Auto White Balance control and most other functions of the camera. The result is a product that offers faster and more powerful auto focus than ever before, faster image processing, better image quality and longer battery life.

Advanced Face Detection AF/AE/FE Technology and Red-Eye Correction
With Canon's new Face Detection AF/AE/FE function, the camera can detect, lock on, and track multiple human faces in a scene. The face detection algorithm automatically prioritizes and selects faces (based on Canon's Intelligent Scene Analysis/iSAPS technology). It will then optimize the focus, exposure and flash to help ensure the best possible results for even easier picture taking moments. The result is flattering portraits and group shots where all of the subjects are in clearer focus and accurately exposed.

Compared to previous Canon cameras with Face Detection technology, the PowerShot SD870 IS IS digital camera adds several improvements, including the ability to use the function for movies as well as still images, the ability to detect faces that are further away or not aimed directly at the camera, and better control of flash exposure. Working with the camera's Face Detection technology, Canon's new Red-eye Correction feature helps detect and corrects, during playback mode, that bothersome by-product of flash photography. Images can be corrected manually while viewing photos on the LCD screen to help vanquish red-eye, once and for all. Because most images will no longer require laborious post-processing with a computer, the in-camera Red-eye Correction feature is ideal for direct printing.

Canon SD870 IS
Extra Large 3-inch PureColor LCD Monitor With Wide Viewing Angle
The SD870 IS Digital ELPH camera's 3-inch, 230,000-pixel, color TFT LCD screen with a wide viewing angle making images easier to preview and review, and camera menus easier to read in a wide range of lighting conditions. The extra large 3-inch LCD screen gives you the big picture, whether you're shooting, reviewing or showing off your images. This extra-durable, high-resolution screen with tough scratch-resistant coating on the anti-reflective, PureColor LCD screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient. Clear and bright, it also features Night Display for easy viewing in low light.
SD/SDHC-Compatible Digital ELPH
The Canon PowerShot SD870 IS uses the incredibly tiny SD memory cards. Get expanded capacity and high-speed writing from a memory card the size of a postage stamp. As an added convenience, the Canon PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH also accommodates MultiMedia MMC and MMC+ memory cards, as well as standard SD memory cards and the new, high-capacity SDHC memory cards. This way, you do not have to carry around multiple memory cards in order to be able to continue to save those special moments during extended vacations or high-photo-taking adventures. Canon PowerShot owners can travel in sleek style.
17 Shooting Modes
The Canon SD870 IS offers a wide variety of shooting modes to optimize the camera's performance based on user preferences or shooting conditions. With 18 Shooting Modes including 11 Special Scene Modes, you're ready for whatever shot comes your way. These modes include:
  • Auto - The camera chooses all the settings so you can concentrate on your subject.
  • Camera M (Manual) - The ultimate in creative control, you set aperture and shutter speed.
  • Digital Macro - The camera trims the image center and digitally zooms to create beautiful enlarged close-ups.
  • Color Accent - Choose to retain a single color in your image while other colors turn monochrome.
  • Color Swap - Enables users to alter specific colors in an image by sampling another color from the same image or any other image on the camera's memory card.
  • Stitch Assist - Build inspiring panoramas by neatly aligning sequential images.
  • Movie - QQVGA (160 x 120), QVGA (320 x 240), VGA (640 x 480) and XGA (1,024 x 768) with audio allow for continuous recording. Unwanted scenes can be deleted in playback mode.
  • Special Scene - Expanded special scene modes that include Underwater and Aquarium settings.
10 Special Scene Modes
The Special Scene mode allows users to achieve optimum results in popular picture-taking situations including:
  • Portrait - The camera sets a large aperture, focuses the subject and artistically blurs the background to make your subject "pop".
  • Foliage - Capture brilliant shots of autumn foliage, greenery and flowers.
  • Snow - Shoot clear snow scenes without darkened subjects and bluish tint.
  • Beach - Get clear shots of people at a sunny beach without darkened faces.
  • Fireworks - Grab brilliant images of skyrocketing fireworks.
  • Aquarium - Permits low light, no-flash photography in situations where using a flash would ruin a picture by bouncing back off aquarium glass or other reflective surfaces.
  • Underwater - Achieve natural-looking color even when shooting underwater.
  • Kids & Pets - Shoot moving subjects without losing your chance to get those unforgettable moments.
  • Indoor - Improves natural color and reduces camera shake while shooting under artificial light.
  • Night Snapshot - Capture people against a softly glowing night background without a tripod.
ISO 1600 Sensitivity
Thanks to the DIGIC III chip's more aggressive noise reduction, the SD870 IS Digital ELPH is able to shoot at ISO equivalent speed ratings from 80 to as high as 1600. This increased sensitivity at the top-end allows the use of faster shutter speeds, significantly reducing camera shake and subject blur during hand held low-light photography.
Canon iSAPS Technology
Over the past 68 years, Canon has accumulated a vast amount of photographic data and know-how and used it to create some of the most innovative camera products in the marketplace. Now, using that same data and know-how, Canon has developed an exclusive technology called iSAPS (Intelligent Scene Analysis based on Photographic Space) that can predict certain camera settings such as focusing distance, exposure and optimum white balance based on zoom focal length, overall light level and tonal distribution data. Canon refers to this collective data as "Photographic Space." By incorporating iSAPS technology into its PowerShot line, the cameras can analyze a scene just before the image is made and in doing so, increase the speed and precision of the camera's autofocus, auto exposure and auto white balance.
Flexible Movie Modes Including DV-Quality 600 x 480 30-fps VGA Movie Mode
With a highly flexible movie mode, you can create the movie that's perfect for any application. Select from VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) with frame rates of 30 fps and 15 fps for recording up to 1 hour or 4GB. Plus Compact Movie Mode (QQVGA; 160 x 120 pixels) records at 15 fps for up to 3 minutes.
Print/Share Button
The PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH features Canon's popular Print and Share function, which enables one-touch direct printing or direct transfer via PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) to compatible personal computers using the supplied USB interface cable. Once connected, the Print/Share button will light up blue, indicating that it is ready to print.
Direct Printing
Direct Printing significantly expands the appeal of the PowerShot SD870 IS digital camera by making it simple, quick and convenient to produce high-quality photos without the need for a personal computer. Beyond its Direct Print capability with Canon's Card Photo Printers and acclaimed Canon Direct Photo Printers, the camera is also compatible with PictBridge, an industry protocol that offers the flexibility of direct printing to other brands of PictBridge compatible printers.

The PowerShot SD870 IS supports all current PictBridge functions. Established as the global industry standard for direct printing from any PictBridge compliant camera to any PictBridge compliant printer regardless of brand, these functions include single image prints, several selected images per print, as well as more advanced PictBridge setup features including print cropping, quantity selection, date imprinting, Layout print (fixed size), Layout print (N-up) and File Name imprinting.

The PowerShot SD870 IS digital camera supports Exif Print, a worldwide standard that transfers important camera settings and data from the camera to the printer ensuring the photos you print will look true to life. Moreover, DPOF 1.1 (Digital Print Order Format) lets users specify the images to be printed or execute batch printing of selected images.

The PowerShot SD870 IS features Direct Print options including ID Photo Print that automatically generates passport style prints on 4x6 paper with Canon CP type printers as well as ID prints of various sizes (selectable on the camera-menu) and even in-camera image cropping using the camera's monitor. The SD870 IS Direct Print capability also includes Movie Print mode that prints thumbnail sequences from movie clip captures (with Canon CP-type printers). While the camera automatically calculates the thumbnail intervals based on the length of the movie clip, sequences of up to 20 thumbnails can be printed to credit card-sized paper and up to 63 on Postcard-size paper.

Direct Transfer
Beyond the new Print/Share button and Direct Print features, the PowerShot SD870 IS also provides a Direct Transfer setting that permits instant image download to Windows computers (using a USB cable connection). The Direct Transfer mode features five options: Download all images; Download New Images Only; Download Only DPOF (Digital Print Order Format)-selected images (protocol used for batch printing); select images on camera's LCD monitor and download and download selected image and make it into Windows Wallpaper. Appropriate driver software is provided with the camera for Windows 98, 2000 and ME operating systems; no drivers are needed to operate the Direct Transfer feature using Windows XP.
High-Speed USB 2.0
The pace of image transfer is accelerated (when used with a USB 2.0 compatible computer, printer or other peripheral) thanks to the inclusion of a High-Speed USB 2.0 port, the first time this feature has appeared in the PowerShot series. The USB 2.0 port is backwards compatible (at no increased speed) with computers featuring standard USB 1.1 connections.
9-Point AiAF Autofocus System and Single-Point AF
The PowerShot SD870 IS's faster and more responsive intelligent AiAF system reads information from 9 separate points. This makes it possible to frame shots without being constrained by the subject's position. You may also select the standard single center point AF setting to accurately pull the shot into focus. The autofocus system utilizes an AF-assist beam, which can be turned on and off in the menu settings.
Fast and Agile Shutter
The PowerShot SD870 IS Digital ELPH model has a shutter speed that extends from 15 seconds to a fast 1/1600 of a second.
Built-in Multi-Mode Flash
Adding to the power of this aptly named PowerShot camera is a new and more powerful built-in flash with six modes: auto, auto with red-eye reduction, flash on (fill-in flash), flash on with red-eye reduction, flash off and slow synchro.
White Balance Control
Different light sources have different temperatures that can dramatically affect the quality of pictures. So the camera is equipped with selectable high-precision White Balance Settings to handle a full range of shooting conditions. There are 5 presets: Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent and Fluorescent H. Plus there's also Custom and an Auto settings.
Selectable Light Metering
The PowerShot SD870 IS provides a range of Canon's highly advanced exposure features that offer greater control and greater convenience. Selectable Light Metering offers three settings. In the Evaluative setting, the camera reads multiple points across the frame for optimal overall exposure. The Spot Metering setting concentrates on a single area at the center of the image for greater precision in high contrast situations. Centerweighted Averaging Metering, with emphasis on the center of the viewfinder, averages metering out over the entire picture area.
Night Display Function
Night Display automatically brightens the subject by reducing the frame rate on the LCD screen in order to make framing a shot in dusk, night or other lowlight situations easier.
Widescreen 16:9 Ratio Option
Images taken in this setting have a 16:9 aspect ratio, so when viewing images on widescreen televisions or computer monitors, they are displayed without warping or cropping. Also facilitates creating panoramic prints.
