The Olympus E-3 is the flagship of Olympus' Digital SLR line and provides the high-precision performance demanded by professional and enthusiastic photographers. It combines speed and weatherproof durability for capturing exceptional images in any situation. Olympus pioneered Full Time Live View and Dust Reduction technologies for digital SLR cameras, leading where others have followed. The E-3 enhances those technical innovations and raises the performance bar with the fastest autofocus in the world. Body-Integrated Mechanical Image Stabilization to stabilize every lens, a 10-megapixel Live MOS image sensor to capture beautiful images, and a magnesium alloy body for dust-proof and splash-proof durability join the impressive innovations developed for the E-3. A dual-axis swivel 2.5-inch Live View LCD covers all the viewing angles from low to high and side to side, to assure accurate composition.
When coupled with Zuiko Digital Supersonic Wave Drive™ (SWD) Lenses like the ED 12-60mm f2.8-4.0 (24-120mm equivalent), the E-3 offers unmatched AF speeds, and the fastest AF speed in the world with that lens. It employs a newly-developed high-speed 11-point biaxial cross-type AF system, 5 frames-per-second continuous shooting, and 1/8000-second top shutter speed for the quickness required in any shooting situation. In-Body Mechanical Image Stabilization with Supersonic Wave Drive technology ensure blur-free images for all lenses attached to the E-3, so even low-light telephoto shots are clear and sharp when holding the camera in shaky hands. Its 10-megapixel Live MOS Image Sensor delivers high-resolution images for large format print sizes, and TruePic III™ digital processing engine ensures high-speed image processing, accurate color and improved detail with low noise. The camera's interior components combined with digital-specific lenses offer the edge-to-edge crystal clarity that only 100 percent digital optics can provide.
The E-3's large optical viewfinder provides a 100 percent accurate view and its 1.15x magnification makes it one of the largest and most accurate viewfinders for reliable composition. The proven effective built-in Dust Reduction System with the Supersonic Wave Filter eliminates spots from photos. A durable shutter mechanism with the lifespan of 150,000 exposures meets the demands of serious photographers. Also, the E-3's sealed magnesium alloy chassis is completely splash-proof and dust-proof for use with pro lenses on expeditions to the most extreme environments on the planet.

- 10.1 Megapixel High-Speed Live MOS Image Sensor
- The newly developed 10.1-megapixel High-Speed Live MOS Sensor faithfully reproduces the subject with high resolution, rich gradations, natural color and fine detail. Radical improvements in material and technology result in a compact, high-performance image sensor unit with low power consumption, low heat generation and low noise generation. This reduced power consumption saves battery life and makes possible the E-3's permanent Live View capability. The new image sensor also boasts a higher read speed, enabling high-speed sequential shooting at 5 frames per second.
- Sophisticated In-Camera Image Stabilization System
- The E-3 delivers sharp shots in low light or with a telephoto lens even without a tripod. A sophisticated body-mounted image stabilization system compensates for camera shake by shifting the image sensor up to an equivalent of five shutter speed steps. At the heart of the built-in image stabilizer unit are the Olympus-exclusive Supersonic Wave Drive motors with excellent responsiveness and control. An advanced, extremely accurate gyro sensor detects and analyzes even the slightest hand tremble. The motors use this information and immediately shift the image sensor unit accordingly.
- TruePic III Image Processor
- The E-3 delivers superior color and quality with the help of TruePic™ III -- Olympus' fastest processor yet. It gives you better color and quality through true-to-life skin tones, brilliant blue skies, precise color transitions, more detail and less image noise. On top of all that, TruePicIII™provides faster performance with faster write speeds to your media cards, faster shot-to-shot times and faster connectivity to your PC or Mac. TruePic™III is the engine that drives the camera's performance and brings your images to life.
TruePic™III delivers three key technologies. Advanced Noise Filter III technology precisely separates noise from image data to create a lifelike reproduction of your subject with minimal noise. Advanced Detail Reproduction technology precisely detects edges for smooth edge-to-edge reproduction, and removes color artifacts. Advanced Proper Gamma III technology improves the ability to independently control luminance and chrominance signals, and assures a more realistic reproduction of pale color tones.
- High-Speed 11-Point Autofocus With Full-Twin Cross AF Sensors
- The 11-point AF sensor incorporated in the E-3 features a fully crossed array of 11 points, each of which is composed of two horizontal and vertical lines to improve accuracy. Dual sensing arrays on both vertical and horizontal axes are arranged in a unique half-pitch shifted pattern that dramatically improves autofocusing precision, making it possible to detect contrast in both horizontal and vertical directions and prevent subject patterns from interfering with AF operation. Determination of the position of the 11 AF points was based on statistical analysis of the positions of the main objects in thousands of different photos as well as input from professional photographers.
Thanks to a dedicated AF data processing engine that can process data from all sensors simultaneously and a sophisticated new distance-measuring algorithm, processing speed and object capturing/tracking performance have been greatly improved, resulting in the world's fastest AF speed*. In addition, a unique pixel addition technology is used to expand the distance-measuring brightness range from -2 to 19 EV, ensuring high-precision autofocusing performance even in low light.
- High-Speed Sequential Shooting At 5 Frames per Second
- The E-3's highly reliable 5-fps burst shooting provides extra flexibility when shooting sports, wildlife or any other dynamic subjects. The E-3's ability to process over 10 million pixels of high-quality image data at extremely high speed enables continuous shooting at up to five frames per second. In fact, you can shoot until your finger tires -- as continuous shooting up to the limit of available memory is possible at the highest resolution setting.* If the memory card slot cover is opened during card writing, image data is held in the buffer memory. Writing continues when the card lid is closed again.
- 1/8000 Second High-Speed Shutter
- You can capture spectacular images using the E-3's 1/8000-second high-speed shutter, while shooting at maximum aperture even under very bright lighting conditions. The E-3 also boasts an ultra-fast shutter release time, allowing instant shooting for superior tracking and response. The camera also employs a highly reliable mirror construction engineered to achieve the precision required for the high-speed shutter. Simplifying the drive mechanism increases precision while reducing transmission loss. And a carbon-based plastic was used for the mirror box to provide twice the rigidity of conventional mirror boxes.
- Splash-Proof and Dust-Proof Design, Rugged Magnesium Alloy Body
- The E-3 boasts a rugged camera body featuring a splash- and dust-proof construction, with all major parts -- including the built-in flash, LCD monitor and switches -- sealed to keep out sand, dust, rain and splashes. The same goes for Zuiko Digital lenses. You'll find splash-proof and dust-proof models that are as tightly sealed as the camera. When the E-3 body is combined with one of the Pro Line dust- and splash-proof Zuiko Digital lenses, users can shoot with confidence even under the most severe conditions.
Made of a thixomold magnesium alloy with homogeneous composition, the E-3 camera body is extremely strong, durable and lightweight. As the use of swiveling LCD monitor makes it unnecessary to make holes for the LCD monitor on the back panel, the back panel also has the rigidity and durability required to protect the delicate internal mechanisms. The camera's interior is supported by structural members made of durable, high-precision engineering plastics and reinforced by a metallic frame.
- Dual-Axis Flexible-Angle Live View HyperCrystal LCD
- The big and bright 2.5-inch LCD displays with approximately 230,000 pixels include HyperCrystal™ technology, which offers many times the contrast of conventional LCD monitors, and enables images to be beautifully displayed in vivid color -- both in preview and playback. The HyperCrystal LCD also provides a wide viewing angle, which ensures images can be composed from even the most obscure angles. The larger LCD makes viewing icons and text on the camera's menu a squint-free process.
Live View shooting allows real-time hunting and framing of your subject right on the LCD. Enabling ultra high-angle and low-angle shooting, the dual-axis flexible-angle Live View monitor can be rotated freely -- up and down and from side to side -- allowing you to take shots from angles impossible up until now. The LCD monitor displays 100 percent of the field of view and can be used in AF shooting. A sensor installed on the upper left side of the swivel LCD analyzes the brightness of the surroundings and then automatically adjusts the brightness of the LCD. If you are outdoors under bright sunlight, the LCD's brightness and contrast are increased to improve visibility; when in a dark setting or at night, brightness is decreased for easier viewing.
Display three different framing-assist patterns on the LCD monitor -- a grid, golden section, or a scale -- without switching the actual physical focusing screen. In addition, you can display a histogram to check for proper exposure and tone distribution before you even take a shot. With Live View, you can check the effects of white balance adjustment and exposure compensation right on the LCD monitor, in real time, as you compose your shot. You can even use the Gradation Auto setting (utilizing Shadow Adjustment Technology) to adjust under-exposed areas while retaining background brightness -- and confirm it, before you shoot, on the LCD. During Live View shooting, select any area of your image that you want to precisely focus on by moving the focusing point to various parts of the LCD. You can then magnify your point of interest by five, seven or 10 times and focus on it manually. This is a powerful feature when fine focus adjustment is required in macro or studio shooting.
- Master Light Like Never Before With Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses™
- Most other digital SLR cameras use traditional 35mm film lenses on digital bodies. But since those lenses are based on designs from the beginning of the last century for film and not for pixels, they deliver insufficient light at the edges of a digital camera's image sensor. This can result in reduced sharpness and color definition, particularly when shooting with wide-angle lenses. The E-3 does not have this problem, because it accommodates the full line of interchangeable Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses™ designed specifically for digital capture with smart technology that allows the lenses to communicate with the camera to ensure the best possible image quality.
Designed for the Four Thirds System, Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses are perfectly matched to the E-3's image sensor. Light is focused directly to all parts of the sensor, which is designed for edge-to-edge sharpness, image quality, vibrant colors and sharp contrasts. With twice the resolving power of equivalent film lenses. Zuiko Digital Specific Lenses are designed to meet the needs of the most demanding professional photographer, with image quality that can actually surpass pictures produced with a 35mm film camera.
The Zuiko line-up includes three splash-proof, dust-proof lenses incorporating the Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) autofocusing system. In addition to extreme precision and control, the SWD enables unparalleled autofocusing speeds when used in combination with the E-3 professional Digital SLR. Ensuring great flexibility, the SWD lenses are incredibly bright and cover a combined focal length range spanning 12-200mm (equiv. to 24-400mm).
- Supersonic Wave Filter Repels Dust
- Change lenses on the fly, without consequence. A common problem with interchangeable lens digital SLR cameras is dust settling on the image sensor. The features an Olympus exclusive patented ultrasonic technology, the Supersonic Wave Filter™, to reduce the effects of micro dust settling on the image sensor and impacting the image quality. Located between the shutter and the CCD, the Supersonic Wave Filter uses high-speed ultrasonic vibration to cause most types of dust to fall away from the image sensor so it will not appear in photographs. The filter vibrates at 300,000 times per second and is activated every time the camera powers on, or manually via a menu selection, to instantly remove the dust from in front of the image sensor. The CCD assembly is isolated from the Supersonic Wave Filter by an airtight seal to protect it even more. This unique Olympus feature gives photographers the confidence to shoot photos and change lenses in the field, just as they've always done, without the worry of images being damaged or ruined by dust on the imager.

- Large, Precision Optical Viewfinder
- The E-3's large optical viewfinder provides a 100% accurate frame view (horizontal and vertical) for precision framing and image capture, and is designed specifically to match the size and format of the Four Thirds image sensor. The viewfinder also provides 1.15x magnification. Even fine details are seen with astonishing clarity. The E-3's large, precision-crafted pentaprism is crafted from high refractive index glass with a highly reflective silver coating. The eyepiece uses glass lenses. All the lenses are surface coated to maintain brightness. This viewfinder also offers an impeccably sharp and bright view of your subject with the use of Olympus' exclusive Neo-Lumi-Micron Matte II Focusing Screen, a deformed hexagonal micro prism designed to reduce the moire effect in the viewfinder for clear, sharp viewfinder focus.
- Dual Memory Slots For Choice Of Storage Media
- Two slots are provided for using a CompactFlash (CF Type I or II) or MicroDrive card and an xD-Picture card. Data can be copied between different media and a second card can be used to backup the main card used for recording.
- Picture Mode With Color and Image Adjustments
- The E-3 allows the user to select their choice of image capture using sRGB or Adobe RGB color spaces. sRGB is the color space standard for computer monitors, inkjet printers, scanners, and the Internet, and is used in most digital cameras on the market today. Adobe RGB offers the color space which is suitable to pre-press and printing on CMYK printers. The selection can easily be made using the camera's Main Menu so you can quickly optimize the color performance of the camera depending on the medium you're shooting for.
The picture mode can be selected from Vivid, Natural (Default), Flat (Muted), Portrait and Monotone. With the Vivid, Natural, Flat and Portrait modes, the user can adjust contrast, sharpness and colour saturation in 5 steps. Even more precise setting is possible in the Monotone mode, which also allows the user to control the filter effect (Yellow, Red, Orange or Green) and the Picture tones (Neutral, Sepia, Blue, Purple and Green) of monotone images.
- RAW, JPEG or Simultaneous RAW and JPEG Image Formats
- Image files can be saved in either RAW or JPEG formats. It is also possible to write both RAW and JPEG data simultaneously. JPEG file can be set by selecting the image size from Large, Medium or Small, and the compression rate from Super Fine, Fine, Normal and Basic.
- High-Precision 49-Zone Light Metering System
- Users are offered a choice of Digital ESP (Electro Selective Pattern) 49-point multi pattern metering, center-weighted average metering, or spot metering. The E-3 uses an active pixel method in low light and a hybrid metering system with an integrating amplifier in bright light. This assures a wide photometric dynamic range even under complex lighting conditions for fast, precise metering. A new metering algorithm is used to stabilize the metering performance especially under low-lighted or highlighted subjects. The algorithm also adopts the notion of relation between AF focused point and AF metering value to improve the accuracy of metering.
- Shadow Adjustment Technology
- With the Gradation set to Auto, the new Shadow Adjustment Technology optimally compensates for bright over-exposed highlights and dark under-exposed shadows providing natural-looking images that are closer to what you see with your own eyes. Other Gradation modes available include High Key, Normal (default) and Low Key.
- Loss-Less Compression of RAW Data Without Image Degradation
- High-speed RAW data compression is possible without image degradation. For example, an image of about 17 MB can be compressed to about 11 MB with no loss of quality, allowing you to record more images in the same amount of storage space.
- Secure Grip For High Mobility
- The ergonomically designed body fits comfortably into the photographer's hands, providing a natural grip for both two-hand and one-hand shooting. The large grip on the right side is complemented by a sub-grip that forms an inverse radius to ensure stability and ease of handling even when changing lenses frequently or shooting with a large lens.
- Control System With Instant Response
- The main dial/button is located where it is easiest to control while you're shooting, allowing you to quickly adjust shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation simply by shifting the dial, without having to visually check the dial position. All dials are positioned for easy access and each dial can be customized to control functions including aperture, shutter speed adjustment and menu transition method. For example, the function of the AEL/AFL button can be selected between AF and AE decision timing, the functions of the Fn (Function) buttons can also be selected, and even the functions of the AEL/AFL button and an Fn button can be switched. Together, these dials allow the camera to be adapted to the shooting style of each user, improving operability and facilitating quick response during shooting.
- Super Control Panel
- The Super Control Panel can be displayed on the rear-panel LCD monitor. Besides displaying current shooting and setting information, its intuitive GUI (Graphical User Interface) makes it easy to adjust or check settings using cross-cursor and OK buttons. An extra-large, easy-to-see LCD panel that displays the shutter speed, aperture and exposure compensation value is also provided on the top of the camera body.
