Olympus E-420

The extremely portable Olympus E-420 digital SLR camera is perfect for everyone who wants to step up to the power and performance of a digital SLR yet enjoy the ease of use and ability to compose images on the LCD common to point-and-shoot cameras. Weighing a mere 13.4 ounces, the E-420 is 20 to 40 percent lighter than competing DSLRs. Good things come in this small package, including Live View, which enables users to hold the camera away from their faces and interact with their subjects -- ideal when capturing photos of children, for example.

This lightweight 10-megapixel DSLR offers heavyweight technologies, including a bigger, more viewable 2.7-inch LCD and user-friendly fast On-Screen Autofocus, Face Detection, Shadow Adjustment Technology and Perfect Shot Preview to get the most out of the Live View experience. Additionally, when it comes to Live View, not all LCDs are created equal. At 2.7-inches, the portable E-420 LCD is large enough for users to compose and review images without squinting. The small camera's LCD is not just larger, it is part of a camera with technologies intelligent enough to take advantage of the Live View photography experience.

Extremely Portable, Lightweight Body
Like its predecessor, the E-410, the E-420 represents ultimate in compact design. The E-420 is small enough to fit into a purse or a jacket pocket and light enough to shoot with comfortably all day. Measuring 5.1 inches by 3.6 inches by 2.1 inches (excluding protrusions), it is the world's smallest digital SLR.* And at a featherweight 13.4 ounces, only its predecessor (E-410) weighs less. Olympus achieved this by reducing grip size, choosing the right component designs and materials, and optimizing the layout. To ensure the highest level of resistance to shocks and damage, the circuit boards feature a flexible structure while the box inside the camera is constructed with high-strength engineering resin and thick metallic frame. Despite its smaller size, the improved grip design allows for easier one-handed operation and ensures a secure hold in the most challenging shooting conditions.

* Among interchangeable lens type digital SLR cameras as of March 5, 2008 (Olympus in-house research)
AF Live View
The advanced new AF Live View function incorporated in the E-420 is an improved version of Olympus's original breakthrough Live View Technology. With AF Live View, autofocusing based on contrast detection is available for the first time in Olympus's line of digital SLR cameras. When the shutter button is pressed halfway in Live View shooting, by High Speed Imager AF* system, contrast values are detected at the image sensor and focusing is adjusted at the peak contrast position. The AF in Olympus's previous Live View used a phase-difference detection system in which the mirror was moved down temporarily, but with Olympus's new AF Live View, users can shoot in the same way as they would with a compact digital camera*, making Live View shooting easier and more convenient than ever. * When a lens other than the Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6, ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 or ED 25mm f2.8 is used, the number of AF focusing points changes to 3 and AF is executed again when the shutter button is pressed all the way. With the ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 or ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6, lens, the firmware needs to be updated to Ver.1.1 or later.
Patented Dust Reduction Technology for Spot-Free Photos
Dust and dirt -- whether it gets inside when the lens is changed or is produced by friction inside the camera when the shutter is opened and closed repeatedly -- is the photographer's biggest enemy. Once it gets on the low-pass filter or the image sensor, even tiny specks of dust will show up in your photographs, spoiling what would otherwise be a great shot. Olympus has always viewed dust as a critical issue in digital SLR cameras and solved it by incorporating a SSWF (Super-Sonic Wave Filter) unit that literally shakes the dust loose so it can be collected with a dust absorber. Activated whenever the camera is powered on or when Live View is in use, the SSWF unit vibrates at supersonic speeds, removing dirt and dust that cannot be removed simply by moving the image sensor up and down. This system can even remove fine dust attached by intermolecular force that cannot be removed by static electric discharge.

With the E-420's Dust Reduction System, changing lenses in the field (or in your family room) won't ruin your images. Your photos will be spot-free, without you needing to retouch them on a computer.

Olympus E-420 with Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 and ED 40-150mm f4.0-5.6 Leness
All-Digital Interchangeable Zuiko® Lenses
Most other digital SLR cameras use traditional 35mm film lenses on digital bodies. But since those lenses are based on designs from the beginning of the last century for film and not for pixels, they deliver insufficient light at the edges of a digital camera's image sensor. This can result in reduced sharpness and color definition, particularly when shooting with wide-angle lenses.

The E-420 does not have this problem, because it is fully compatible with the largest selection of world-class optics -- precision-crafted digital-specific Zuiko lenses -- designed specifically for digital excellence. With each pristine-glass lens perfectly matched to the camera's image sensor, light is received by each pixel. So you'll see crisper, more accurate results all across your photographs. To correct potential distortions automatically, these Zuiko lenses directly communicate with the camera through their own internal CPU. You'll not only enjoy an extra measure of quality and accuracy -- the kind that film lenses simply cannot match -- but you'll appreciate the compact, go-anywhere styling of this versatile line of digital lenses. See for yourself -- with all digital-lenses precisely matched to the E-420's image sensor, your photos will have the same degree of clarity, brightness and detail at their edges as they do in the center.

Olympus dedicated digital optics paired with the 100% digital E-420 render sharpness and contrast more consistently at any given f-stop. The lenses are matched to the Four Thirds System standard image sensor for the optimal balance between image quality, camera and lens size, and expandability. With an array of digital specific lenses to choose from that are smaller and lighter than comparable 35mm film lenses, it's easy to select the ideal instruments to bring along when you don't want to lug a lot of heavy, bulky gear.

The E-420 14-42mm Lens Kit includes a compact, Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f3.5-f5.6 Lens (equivalent to 28mm-84mm in 35mm photography) that perfectly matches the imager so light strikes the sensor directly to ensure rich, accurate colors and edge-to-edge sharpness. Its 3x wide-angle zoom covers the range most frequently used in ordinary photography and it weighs just 6.7 ounces, offering users an extremely dynamic, portable everyday-use zoom. Close-ups as near as 9.84 inches are possible throughout the zoom range.

The E-420 25mm Lens Kit includes the new ED 25mm f2.8 Zuiko Digital Lens. With a focal distance equivalent to 50 mm on a 35 mm film camera lens, this standard pancake-type lens provides an image angle very close to that of the naked eye. The result is a near-natural visual field that makes this an ideal standard lens for daily use, whether for simple snapshots or for more sophisticated portrait and landscape shooting.

Olympus E-420 2.7-inch HyperCrystal II LCD Monitor
2.7-inch HyperCrystal II LCD Monitor With Improved Live View Technology
The E-420's Live View LCD enables photographers to hold the camera away from their faces and at angles they just cannot reach by using the optical viewfinder alone. The E-420's new Live View autofocus functionality now simplifies the process by working just like a point and shoot. The E-420 uses a new 2.7-inch HyperCrystal II LCD monitor with even higher visibility than previous Olympus LCD monitors. The LCD incorporates new HyperCrystal II technology. This display offers twice the contrast for better viewing in extreme light conditions (i.e. when the sun is at your back), a broader color gamut that displays a greater range of color detail, and a 176-degree viewing angle. The increased contrast and expanded color reproduction gamut enable finer image checking in Live View shooting and picture playback. With a viewing angle of 176 degrees in all directions, checking the monitor image is easy from any angle. Image reproduction in Live View shooting and picture playback is further improved by an anti-reflection multi-coating and easy-to-use color temperature adjustment that works the same way as a traditional brightness adjustment control.
TruePic III™ Image Processor for Clarity and Speed
Olympus' enhanced TruePic III Image Processor produces crystal clear photos using all the pixel information for each image to provide the best digital images possible for every photo with accurate color, true-to-life flesh tones, brilliant blue skies and precise tonal representation in between. TruePic III also lowers image noise by one step to reduce noise in images shot at higher ISO settings, enabling great results in low-light situations. The TruePic III image processing engine features an advanced processing algorithm to improve imaging performance, gradation expression and color reproduction. The E-420's TruePic III Image Processor enables it to shoot up to 3.5 frames per second in sequenced shooting mode, which means that photographers will be able to capture fast-paced action as it happens.
10 Megapixel Live MOS Image Sensor
The E-420 is loaded with an impressive 10 million pixels for high-resolution photos. The 10-megapixel sensor gives photographers the flexibility to blow up their prints to the large sizes supported by many of today's printers, or crop the image to print only a part of the image that is important to them. The E-420 uses a powerful new 10-megapixel Live MOS Sensor for image capturing that enables accurate reproduction of details with natural, vivid colors. The new sensor features an improved dynamic range to ensure richer, more subtle gradations, giving images a natural, true-to-life appearance.
Olympus E-420 with ED 25mm Lens
Olympus E-420 with ED 25mm f2.8 Zuiko Digital Lens
Fast 3.5 Frames-per-Second Sequential Shooting
Sequential shooting performance has been improved to 3.5 frames per second. Now it is easier to capture the best moment from fast moving subjects or human expressions that constantly change from one instant to the next.
Built-in Flash With Wireless Flash Control
If you decide to venture into the arena of advanced lighting, the E-420 is ready to meet the challenge. The powerful built-in flash incorporates a commander function for combined operation with wireless flashes, a feature already proven on Olympus's flagship DSLR, the E-3. When the FL-50R and/or FL-36R external flashes are used, multiple flashes can be controlled without either connection cables or an external commander. Settings (including flash mode and intensity) can be adjusted on the LCD panel on the back of the camera. The E-420 can control up to three wireless flash groups independently, with several flash units per group.
Face Detection
The E-420's Face Detection feature distinguishes between people's faces and the background. It tracks up to eight faces within the image area and automatically focuses and optimizes exposure for sharp, brilliant portrait pictures. Even if your subjects are moving, the camera continuously tracks their faces. This works in conjunction with Face & Back Control, which optimizes exposure for the faces in the foreground and the scenery in the background, assuring sharp, clear, more natural-looking pictures. Even when shooting against the light, faces can be optimally exposed without over-exposing the background.
Perfect Shot Preview
Perfect Shot Preview enables users to preview and select various photographic effects on a live, multi-window screen on the LCD before snapping the shot. This feature shows photographers what their images will look like beforehand under various settings, ensuring that they capture exactly what they want. It is an ideal way for novice users to learn about the effects of different photography techniques, such as exposure compensation, white balance and metering.
Shadow Adjustment Technology
Shooting scenes with shadows can be tricky because of the extreme contrast between dark and bright areas. The E-420 addresses this challenge with Shadow Adjustment Technology that compensates for extreme contrast when shadow areas are underexposed and lack visible detail. Now users can preview and capture images with the same fine contrast they see with their own eyes.
Dual Memory Card Slots
The E-420 features Dual Memory Slots -- one for CompactFlash or Microdrive and another for xD-Picture Cards™ -- which add to the camera's practicality and provide extra data storage. Simply depress a button on the back of the camera to choose which card type to capture to and copy images back and forth from one card to the other in playback. For increased storage flexibility, switch between CF and xD-Picture Cards when one becomes full. Or use the camera's menu to copy an image onto both, for backup purposes.
Olympus E-420
Full Range of Shooting Modes Including 18 Pre-set Scene-Select Modes
While the E-420 includes a full range of manual control options to customize your creativity, it also has shooting modes designed to provide the ideal settings for a variety of shooting situations automatically. These include Digital Image Stabilization, Night Scene, Fireworks, Beach and Snow, and Candle Light to name a few, as well as an xD Panorama mode (for use with Olympus xD-Picture Cards). Users also benefit from special color modes and the possibility to apply a variety of Black & White filters. With 18 pre-set scene-select modes for every imaginable shooting scenario and full manual controls, the E-420 offers a world of possibilities to photographers.
5 Metering Modes
The 49-Point Digital ESP Light Meter enables digital electro selective pattern metering for accurate exposures under the largest number of conditions. The Digital ESP can also be linked to the AF (auto focus) selection or independent of the AF selection for even more versatility. Olympus' widely acclaimed proprietary Digital ESP metering calculates the best light values under complex lighting conditions. Center-weighted metering is biased to the center of the viewfinder (cross) area. Spot Meter (1%) enables the most accurate metering for tough lighting conditions like backlit or spot lit. Highlight Spot Meter adjusts for predominantly white subject for correct exposure with detail. Shadow Spot Meter adjusts for a black subject, providing the correct exposure with detail.
Simultaneous RAW and JPEG Image Recording
A choice of two image formats is offered: RAW and JPEG. If desired, image data can be simultaneously recorded in RAW and JPEG with the RAW+JPEG format.
A Choice of Two Color Space Settings
Users can choose from two color space settings according to their needs: sRGB, which is the standard for computer monitor viewing and inkjet printer output, and Adobe® RGB, which is widely used for commercial applications.
Olympus E-420
Contrast and Sharpness Controls
Contrast and sharpness can be set to any of five levels. So whether users want pro-quality tonal fidelity or sharp vibrant colors, they can customize each image to suit their preference.
White Balance
Seven preset white balance settings (3000K - 7500K) are available, with ±7-step fine-tuning available in Auto WB and Preset WB mode. A one-touch white balance function allows users to store and retrieve a frequently used white balance setting at the touch of a button. Many digital SLR users want to focus their attention on things other than white balance while they are on the move. As a result, the E-420 features an improved automatic white balance performance with a new algorithm for more accurate color.
Noise Reduction
The noise reduction function uses a proprietary Olympus algorithm to detect and eliminate the fixed noise that can appear on long-exposure images.
RGB Histogram Information Display
The E-420 will display an individual histogram for each color channel (RGB) as well as the overall luminance of the exposure. This information is valuable to the more advanced user who may need to alter the exposure for specific output sources. A display that identifies overexposed highlights or underexposed shadow areas is also an option in image playback mode.
Self-timer and Remote Control
The built-in self-timer offers a choice of 12-second or 2-second delay. An optional RM-1 remote control unit is available and can be used with the 2-second delay setting or for immediate shutter release, as well as to control "bulb" shutter openings for longer exposures.
