Olympus ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens

Features in Detail | Enlarged Image

The Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD is a high-performance super-telephoto zoom lens that covers a zoom range equivalent to 100mm to 400mm on a 35mm camera lens. ED lens elements are used extensively to correct the color blurring that can occur when telephoto lenses are extended to their maximum focal length, while the 100 percent designed exclusively for digital photography design ensures high-definition performance with clear, crisp images from edge to edge. Close-up shooting capability is also superb, with a minimum shooting distance of just 3.9 feet throughout the zoom range.

Autofocus is powered by Olympus' breakthrough SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive), enabling this lens to achieve an AF speed about two times faster* than the previous ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 model. The ideal partner for the E-3, the Zuiko Digital ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 SWD maximizes that camera's high-speed autofocus capability, and with its superior tracking capability, this lens is ideal for sports photography and outdoor shooting applications.

Ultra-Fast SWD (Supersonic Wave Drive) Autofocus
Olympus-proprietary SWD technology has enabled an ultra-fast, whisper-quiet, high-precision AF system. Two compact, high-powered SWD devices power autofocus at an ultra-high speed by exciting unique elliptical oscillations, while an ultra-compact 5.3mm x 4.3mm optical encoder detects and controls the lens drive position using direct rotation detection without reduction gear. This enables it to achieve a level of precision that's accurate to 5 microns (5/1000 mm). The AF speed is about 2 times* the previous ED 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 model. With its high speed and superior tracking capability, this lens is ideal for sports photography and outdoor shooting applications.

High-Performance 4x Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens
This compact, fast f2.8-3.5 50-200mm Zuiko Digital Zoom is the equivalent focal length of a significantly larger 100-400mm zoom lens in 35mm photography. Best-in-class f2.8-3.5 brightness and quality construction combine to ensure high imaging performance with improved sharpness and contrast all over the zooming range. With coverage that extends to the super-telephoto domain equivalent to 400 mm on a 35mm camera lens, this lens makes it possible to capture the motion of a distant subject or take spectacular landscapes by taking advantage of the super-telephoto compression effect. With the EC-20 teleconverter lens (sold separately), you'll easily be able to boost telephoto capability to a field angle equivalent to 800 mm on a 35mm camera lens.
Excellent Close-Focusing Capability
The focusing system uses floating and inner focusing mechanisms to provide a minimum shooting distance of 3.94 feet (1.2 m) throughout the zoom range. With a maximum shooting magnification of 0.21x (equivalent to 0.42x on a 35mm camera lens), this lens outperforms any other in its class (large-aperture zoom lenses capable of covering the super-telephoto domain). This powerful closeup capability makes it easy, for example, to fill the frame with a butterfly that might fly away if you approached too closely.
f2.8-3.5 Brightness
This top-class professional telephoto zoom lens is one of the lightest and most compact of its kind and also has excellent light-gathering power.
16 Elements In 15 Groups, Including 3 ED Glass Lens Elements
Three ED lens elements are used to correct the color blurring noticeable when telephoto lenses are extended to their maximum focal length. Compared to an ordinary optical glass lens, the ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass lens presents extremely small changes in refractivity in the wavelengths from blue to red. It can improve the imaging performance of lenses by reducing chromatic aberration (a phenomenon caused by the dispersion of light produced by deviation of the focusing point due to color differences) that causes color fringing or contrast degradation.
Mechanically Interlocked Manual Focusing Mechanism, Full-Time Manual Focusing
Mechanical interlocking of the manual focusing mechanism allows smooth, natural manual focusing with an extremely high level of precision. Seamless switching from AF to MF is possible at any time thanks to the Full-Time Manual Focusing function.
Reliable Dust-Proof/Drip-Proof Mechanism
To support photography in the extreme conditions often faced by professionals, the external finish is sealed at key points for maximum protection from dust and spray.
Circular Aperture Mechanism
The circular aperture makes it possible to achieve smooth, uniform, soft background defocusing.
Multi-Coated Lens
An improved lens coating reduces glare when shooting against the light and minimizes ghosts and flare.
Large Lens Hood With Polarizer Filter Adjustment Window
The lens hood has a sliding window to facilitate rotation of the polarizer filter if one is used.
Digital Specific Lens™
Zuiko Digital lenses are designed to focus light straight into an imager's pixel wells, to fill every pixel consistently. It's optical technology that delivers an image filled from center to edge with rich, accurate color, high contrast and subtle gradation. Designed exclusively for digital photography, Zuiko Digital lenses provide a level of precision that's simply unattainable from a digital body using a traditional 35mm film lens.

The Olympus FourThirds Standard uses lenses which are just as powerful as the lenses previously developed for 35mm film camera systems despite being about half the size. Thus the focal length of the 50-200mm in the FourThirds Standard gives the same angle of view as a 100-400mm lens for a 35mm film camera. It is important to know that this is not a 2x "crop factor" -- Olympus E-System lenses are designed for this size format and have a much higher resolution than lenses designed generally for 35mm film cameras. The benefit: superb image quality but less weight to carry.

Zuiko lenses feature a near telecentric design that ensures that the light hits the photodiodes at right angles, thus avoiding the problem of blurring at the edges of the image, or corner shading, which often occurs when using lenses originally designed for 35mm film cameras. Combined with the high resolution of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses, this lens design exploits the full potential of the digital camera image sensors. The result is clear photos with strong colors and sharp contrasts right to the edges of the image.

Smart System
Zuiko Digital lenses communicate image information directly to the Olympus E-System Digital SLR for a level of exposure accuracy that's beyond the capabilities of a passive lens.
