Olympus 9-18mm f4.0-f5.6 Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens

Features in Detail | Enlarged Image

Olympus applied its optical expertise to develop the Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f4.0-f5.6, a super-wide-angle zoom lens covering a wide focal length range (18-36mm equivalent in 35mm photography). This compact ultra-wide-angle zoom lens measures just three inches in length and weighs a mere 9.88 ounces for greater portability. It can be used on any of the Olympus E System digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera bodies. This affordable super-wide-angle lens enables stunningly original perspectives with an extra-wide field of view, and perfectly complements the Zuiko Digital ED 18-180mm 1:3.5-6.3 (36-360mm) lens.

The 9-18mm lens' lightweight design coupled with In-Body Image Stabilization -- available on the Olympus E-3, E-510 and E-520 digital SLRs -- makes capturing amazing, blur-free images possible even without a tripod. This affordable 9-18mm consumer lens, along with the Olympus EP 7-14mm F4.0 Pro Grade Zuiko Digital Zoom Lens, gives Olympus two super-wide-angle zoom lenses that feature both image stabilization and a focal distance equivalent to less than 20mm on a 35mm camera. E-System owners also realize the benefits of Live View, which makes it possible to shoot from unique perspectives that are difficult with an optical viewfinder alone, including over a crowd or at ground-level to catch a toddler's first steps.

2x Extreme Wide-Angle Zoom Lens
Focus on more with a larger depth of field. The Zuiko Digital 9-18mm f2.8 - 3.5 (equivalent to 18-36mm in 35mm photography) features a 2x wide-angle zoom capability with a very low wide focal length of 9mm and a minimum focusing distance of less than ten inches. This super-compact and lightweight addition to the E-System is ideal for anything from sweeping landscapes to shots that capture the breadth of a farmer's market in a single shot.
Ultra Compact and Lightweight
A remarkably compact design -- featuring a diameter of 3.1 inches, a length of 2.9 inches and a weight of only 9.9 ounces -- ensures complete portability.
Multi-Coated Lens With One Aspherical ED Lens and Two Aspherical Lens Elements
Aspherical lens components help reduce the lens length and provide optimal aberration correction, achieving a sharp, clear image with exceptional edge-to-edge sharpness and clarity. A specially formulated lens coating optimized for shooting against light minimizes ghosts and flares.
Digital Specific Lens™
Zuiko Digital lenses are designed to focus light straight into an imager's pixel wells, to fill every pixel consistently. It's optical technology that delivers an image filled from center to edge with rich, accurate color, high contrast and subtle gradation. Designed exclusively for digital photography, Zuiko Digital lenses provide a level of precision that's simply unattainable from a digital body using a traditional 35mm film lens.

The Olympus FourThirds Standard uses lenses which are just as powerful as the lenses previously developed for 35mm film camera systems despite being about half the size. Thus the focal length of the 9-18mm in the FourThirds Standard gives the same angle of view as an 22-44mm lens for a 35mm film camera. It is important to know that this is not a 2x "crop factor" -- Olympus E-System lenses are designed for this size format and have a much higher resolution than lenses designed generally for 35mm film cameras. The benefit: superb image quality but less weight to carry.

Zuiko lenses feature a near telecentric design that ensures that the light hits the photodiodes at right angles, thus avoiding the problem of blurring at the edges of the image, or corner shading, which often occurs when using lenses originally designed for 35mm film cameras. Combined with the high resolution of Olympus Zuiko Digital lenses, this lens design exploits the full potential of the digital camera image sensors. The result is clear photos with strong colors and sharp contrasts right to the edges of the image.

Smart System
Zuiko Digital lenses communicate image information directly to the Olympus E-System Digital SLR for a level of exposure accuracy that's beyond the capabilities of a passive lens.
