The 10.1-megapixel Panasonic DMC-FS5 Lumix™ digital camera is one of the first Panasonic Lumix FS-Series of digital cameras. The FS models, a stylish sister-line of the highly-acclaimed Lumix FX-Series, combine easy operation with a slim and sleek look, enabling both beginner and advanced users to take beautiful digital photos with a camera they can slip in their pocket. The FS5 features a 30mm wide-angle Leica DC lens with 4x optical zoom and Intelligent Auto Mode, an advanced intuitive system of technologies that help users take better photos more easily.
Intelligent Auto Mode is comprised of five functions: Mega O.I.S., Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Quick AF (auto focus). MEGA O.I.S. employs gyrosensors to detect hand-shake and a lens system that shifts to compensate, helping to prevent hand-shake from creating a blurry image. With Intelligent ISO, the FS5 can determine if the photo subject is moving and change the ISO setting and shutter speed accordingly, thus giving a blur-free photo. Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode. This intuitive technology helps the photographer use the most common scene modes that are built into the camera, but often go unused, without the need of making any manual adjustments. Panasonic's Face Detection detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure settings so portraits come out clear and crisp. Detecting up to 15 faces, Panasonic's Face Detection can even track a face if the subject is moving. The Quick AF (auto focus) system starts focus on the subject by just pointing the camera to the subject, thus minimizing the AF time.
In addition to powerful the Intelligent Auto Mode, the fourth generation high-performance image-processing Venus Engine IV LSI helps produce higher-quality pictures with an advanced signal processing system. It adds a new high-performance noise reduction system that helps reproduce even the most delicate parts of images naturally and without color bleeding. The Venus Engine IV reduces shutter release time lag while still enabling high-resolution picture taking, making it easier to capture spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities. Other features of the DMC-FS5 include approximately 50 MB of internal memory and a 2.5-inch LCD perfect for easy-to-see viewing of images. Intelligent LCD detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level of the LCD to offer optimal clarity in any situation, whether dark or light, indoors or outdoors.

- With the DMC-FS5, Panasonic has packaged a 30mm wide-angle* Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens with f/3.3 brightness and a 4x optical zoom plus a 10.1-megapixel CCD into a body that is slim, stylish and conveniently compact. The lens unit comprises of seven elements in six groups, including three aspherical lenses to achieve high optical performance while maintaining compactness. Naturally, the lens meets Leica's stringent standards. This high-quality lens combines high brightness and minimal distortion to capture 30mm wide-angle photos* with outstanding, corner-to-corner detail. The 30mm wide-angle lens* provides extra convenience in all shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at a party indoors or shooting a magnificent structure or scene while traveling. The lens lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.
- 4x Optical/4x Digital/16x Combined Zoom/28.4x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 4x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. The camera's 4x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom* may be used together to achieve up to 16x zoom power.
- Up to 7.1x Extended Optical Zoom
- The DMC-FS5's 4x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/2.33" diagonal 10.1-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 7.1x power in 3-megapixel photos.
- MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
- Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. The DMC-FS5 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality. You won't even notice it working -- all you'll see are the outstanding results!
- 2.5" Intelligent LCD Monitor
- The DMC-FS5 incorporates a large, easy-to-see 2.5-inch diagonal LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. This high-quality, 230,000-pixel display makes it easy to see your subject. The DMC-FS5 features the Intelligent LCD function. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in two steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes maximum 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd.
- Slideshow with Music
- The DMC-FS5 also features slideshows with music. Choose from four types of music: Natural, Slow, Swing and Urban. Transition effects timed to the music further enhance the slide changes.
- 1/2.33" 10.1 Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
- The DMC-FS5 features a newly developed CCD. Slightly larger than previous types, this 1/2.33-inch CCD fully supports the camera's 10.1-megapixel resolution. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FS5's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
- Intelligent Auto (iA) Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
- With the DMC-FS5, you don't have to worry about changing a lot of settings every time conditions change. The FS5 not only eliminates blurring from hand-shake or subject movement, it also helps you capture perfect people shots by detecting the face and selecting the focus, exposure and scene mode that get the best results. And it's all automatic. The FS5 even adds a function that begins focusing as soon as you hold up the camera and continuously maintains the focus, so you're ready when the big moment comes.
- Venus Engine IV™ LSI
- The DMC-FS5 features the Venus Engine IV. In the Venus Engine LSI, Panasonic improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels -- red, green and blue. And the Venus Engine IV even goes a step further. By adding the luminance signal from the green pixels in areas with horizontal or vertical lines, Panasonic has raised horizontal or vertical resolution by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible color bleeding. In the Venus Engine IV, the motion detection in the Intelligent ISO Control function has been further enhanced to suppress motion blur even more effectively.
An advanced noise reduction system detects chromatic noise and luminance noise separately. In addition, the Venus Engine IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. Together, they let you capture crisp, high-resolution images with minimal graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting.
Fast Response - 0.005-Second Shutter Release Time Lag With a shutter release time lag of as little as 0.005 second*, Lumix is literally faster than the blink of an eye. This high-speed response makes it easier to capture the perfect expression on a child's face or a spectacular moment in a sports event.
- Face Detection AF and AE
- The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In Intelligent Auto (iA) mode, the camera automatically begins focusing without even having to press the shutter button halfway, so you can catch even sudden photo opportunities.
- Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
- Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
- Mode Dial With Rec/Playback Mode Switch
- The DMC-FS5 incorporates a new REC/PLAYBACK mode switch. Use the Mode Dial to choose the shooting mode, and use the new menu display to choose the playback mode. This helps the photographer to instantly switch between record and play modes, and to always know which mode the camera is in.
- 22 Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
- Portrait Mode: This gives the background a soft focus while capturing the subject clearly and sharply.
- Soft Skin Mode The camera detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than portrait mode.
- Scenery Mode: Capture sweeping vistas in sharp focus.
- Sports Mode: Uses a high shutter speed to catch moving subjects.
- Night Portrait Mode: The MEGA O.I.S. minimizes hand motion at slow shutter speeds, to capture people and night landscapes clearly and beautifully.
- Night Scenery Mode: Allows you to record the nightscape vividly by reducing the shutter speed.
- Self-portrait Mode: This mode makes it easy for you to take pictures of yourself.
- Food Mode: Allows you to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc.
- Party Mode: Select this mode when you want to take pictures at a wedding reception, indoor party etc. By using the flash and slowing down the shutter speed, both people and the background can be recorded with a brightness close to real life.
- Candle Light Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. You can take successful pictures without using the flash.
- Fireworks Mode: his mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky.
- Starry Sky Mode: By making the shutter speed slower, allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in Night Scenery.
- Beach Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures on a beach. It prevents under exposure of the subject due to strong sunlight.
- Aerial Photo Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window.
- Snow Mode: This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
- High Sensitivity Mode: Select this mode for high-sensitivity processing. You can take pictures at ISO 6400 sensitivity equivalent.
- Baby1, Baby2 Modes: This mode takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When the flash is used, the light from it is weaker than usual. You can set the birthdays of two babies (Baby1 and Baby2). The baby's age can then be displayed when playing back pictures.
- Pet Mode: Because pets often won't hold still, this mode switches the camera to Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur. If you input your pet's date of birth, its age in months (at the time a photo was taken) is displayed when you view photos.
- Sunset Mode: Emphasizing red tones, this mode is designed to capture clear, vivid shots of colorful sunsets.
- Hi-speed Burst Mode: You can capture a crucial moment with perfect timing in 2-megapixel resolution (with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9) or 2.5-megapixel resolution (3:2) mode.
- Underwater Mode: This mode reduces excessive blue tone in underwater pictures.
- Intelligent Scene Selector
- When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.
- 9-Point AF
- The number of AF areas has been increased to nine. The camera automatically determines the most appropriate AF area from the nine points. This ensures accurate focusing even for difficult compositions. You can also select the AF setting from Face AF, 1-area high-speed AF and 1-area AF according to your shooting situation. Plus, Quick AF makes sure you won't miss those sudden shooting opportunities.
- Quick AF
- The DMC-FS5 features Quick AF. Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take pictures quickly. Its super-fast focus is ideal for capturing quick photos of active children and pets. By setting the camera to Quick AF, pictures of sudden shooting opportunities won't be out of focus or blurry. Quick AF is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.
- Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
- Allows unlimited consecutive shooting* up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card. The focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.
- Mega Burst™ Imaging
- Just keep the shutter button pressed to fire off consecutive shots (2.5 frames per second with full resolution*) of a moving subject or a person's changing facial expression. Then save only the best ones. With a digital camera, you can just delete any shots you don't want. By using the Scene Mode's High-speed Burst setting, you can enjoy extremely fast consecutive shooting of up to approx. 6 frames per second in 2.5-megapixel or 2-megapixel recording.
- Motion Images (30/10 fps) with Audio
- The DMC-FS5 can record motion images in WVGA (QuickTime Motion JPEG 848 x 480 pixels at 30/15 fps). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-image recording even in low-light settings. Standard motion images can also be recorded in VGA (6uickTime Motion JPEG 40 x 480 pixels at 30/10 fps). In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA 30fps and WVGA 30fps, it is recommended you use a high-speed memory card with '10MB/s' or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded. WVGA (848x480 pixels) images at 30 or 10 fps can be recorded continuously for up to 15 minutes.
- 50MB Built-In Memory
- Take photos even when you don't have an SD/SDHC Memory Card on hand. The built-in memory holds up to 50 MB of image data, which you can later copy to an SD/SDHC Memory Card or PC. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like.
