The world-acclaimed Panasonic Lumix FX series, which the DMC-FX37 proudly joins, pursues high picture quality and unique features in an urbane, sophisticated profile. The 10.1-megapixel Panasonic DMC-FX37 Lumix digital camera offers an astonishing 25mm (35mm equivalent) ultra-wide-angle Leica DC lens with a powerful 5x optical zoom. This lens, equivalent to 25mm to 125 mm on a 35mm film camera, captures almost double the viewing space at the same shooting distance compared to ordinary cameras, resulting in remarkable images with unprecedented width and depth.
Panasonic's iA (intelligent auto) mode, which makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos, has been further enhanced for the DMC-FX37 Lumix camera. The newly added AF Tracking function automatically tracks the subject once the AF has been set even if the subject moves around, making it easier to capture sharp, well-focused photos of decisive moments. The FX37 continually monitors the light source and automatically activates the backlight compensation function if it detects that the light source is behind the subject. Face detection accuracy has also been increased, allowing continuous AF/AE adjustment even if a face moves or turns sideways to the camera. The Intelligent Exposure function helps capture natural-looking, true-to-life images by suppressing blocked shadows and blown highlights.
For image processing, the FX37 features the high-speed, high-performance, next-generation Venus Engine IV. The engine allows the FX37 to shoot up to approx. 310 photos (CIPA) on a single battery charge thanks to improvements in power efficiency. In addition to capturing beautiful still images, the FX37 makes it easy to shoot high-definition 1280 x 720p motion images at 30 fps with outstanding detail. Using the DMW-HDC2 HD Component Cable (available separately), these motion images can be output from the FX37 directly to a TV for large-screen viewing.

- 5x Wide-Angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Zoom Lens
- With the DMC-FX37, Panasonic has packaged a 25mm wide-angle* Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with f/2.8 brightness and a 5x optical zoom plus a 10.1-megapixel CCD into a body that is slim, stylish and conveniently compact. Comprising 7 elements in 6 groups, including 4 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit passes Leica's stringent standards and delivers an exceptional optical performance. Notably, a newly developed unevenly thick concave meniscus EA(extra high refractive index aspherical) lens makes it possible to achieve the 25mm ultra-wide-angle high optical performance while keeping the lens unit thin and the body slim. The 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens records almost double the viewing space at the same shooting distance compared to ordinary 35mm cameras. The 25mm wide-angle lens* (35mm film camera equivalent: 25-125mm) provides extra convenience in all shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at a party indoors or shooting a magnificent structure or scene while traveling.
- 5x Optical/4x Digital/20x Combined Zoom/35.6x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 5x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. The camera's 5x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom* may be used together to achieve up to 20x zoom power.
- Up to 8.9x Extended Optical Zoom
- The DMC-FX37's 4x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/2.33" diagonal 10.1-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 8.9x power in 3-megapixel photos.
- MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
- Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. The DMC-FX37 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality. You won't even notice it working -- all you'll see are the outstanding results! Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. has always offered modes 1 and 2, and now adds an AUTO mode to switch between the modes according to the zoom ratio being used.
- 2.5" Intelligent LCD Monitor With Wide Viewing Angle
- The DMC-FX37 incorporates a large, easy-to-see 2.5-inch diagonal LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. This high-quality, 230,000-pixel display makes it easy to see your subject. The DMC-FX37 features the Intelligent LCD function. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in two steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes maximum 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd. The FX37 features a new panel, which boasts a wide viewing angle, for its Intelligent LCD to ensure clear, easy viewing in all lighting situations.
- 1/2.33" 10.1 Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
- The DMC-FX37 features a larger 1/2.33-inch CCD that fully supports the camera's 10.1-megapixel resolution. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FX37's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
- Venus Engine IV™ LSI
- The DMC-FX37 features the Venus Engine IV. In the Venus Engine LSI, Panasonic improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels -- red, green and blue. And the Venus Engine IV even goes a step further. By adding the luminance signal from the green pixels in areas with horizontal or vertical lines, Panasonic has raised horizontal or vertical resolution by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible color bleeding. In the Venus Engine IV, the motion detection in the Intelligent ISO Control function has been further enhanced to suppress motion blur even more effectively.
An advanced noise reduction system detects chromatic noise and luminance noise separately. In addition, the Venus Engine IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. Together, they let you capture crisp, high-resolution images with minimal graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting.
Fast Response - 0.005-Second Shutter Release Time Lag With a shutter release time lag of as little as 0.005 second*, Lumix is literally faster than the blink of an eye. This high-speed response makes it easier to capture the perfect expression on a child's face or a spectacular moment in a sports event.
- Intelligent Auto (iA) Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
- The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX37 adds a new AF Tracking function to iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, which is a combination of functions that makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos. In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection, and Intelligent Exposure. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.
- AF Tracking Function
- With the new AF Tracking function, the user can "lock" the focus onto a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the user having to hold the shutter button halfway down. This makes it easier to capture the perfect moment clearly and in sharp focus when shooting images of a child, pet, sports or any scene with moving subjects and spur-of-the-moment action.
- Face Detection AF and AE
- The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In Intelligent Auto (iA) mode, the camera automatically begins focusing without even having to press the shutter button halfway, so you can catch even sudden photo opportunities. Plus, detection accuracy has been increased in the DMC-FX37, allowing continuous AF/AE adjustment even if a face moves or turns sideways to the camera. The DMC-FX37 is also equipped with Digital Red-eye Correction. The camera takes care of the red-eye effect that often happens when shooting with a flash, to ensure attractive facial expression always.
- Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
- Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
- Intelligent Exposure
- Intelligent Exposure function increases the exposure only in under-exposed areas by detecting the brightness level part-by-part in the picture. If the background includes the sky, which tends to be easily washed out, the camera automatically adjusts the aperture and shutter speed to keep the setting slightly under-exposed to prevent wash-out while brightening the darkened area by increasing the ISO only in that area. If the background of an indoor portrait receives insufficient lighting from a flash and becomes dark, the ISO sensitivity is raised in only the low-lit area to make it brighter without causing graininess in the subject's face. Intelligent Exposure function is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.
- Intelligent Scene Selector
- When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.
- Mode Dial With Rec/Playback Mode Switch
- The DMC-FX37 incorporates a REC/PLAYBACK mode switch. Use the Mode Dial to choose the shooting mode, and use the menu display to choose the playback mode. This helps the photographer to instantly switch between record and play modes, and to always know which mode the camera is in.
- Intelligent AUTO All settings are made automatically. In this mode, even novices can take beautiful photographs by simply pressing the shutter button.
- Normal Picture Mode (Program AE): The camera automatically sets the aperture and shutter speed according to the subject's brightness. You can adjust the white balance, ISO sensitivity, and other settings to make your photos look their very best.
- Macro Mode: Use this mode to take incredible close-ups. You can focus on subjects within about 2 inches of the lens.
- Motion Picture Mode: QuickTime™ Motion JPEG, complete with audio. This models can record motion pictures in high definition (1280 x 720p).
- Clipboard Mode: You can take photos of maps, timetables and other travel info. They are saved in a separate folder of the built-in memory to distinguish them from normal photos.
- Playback Mode
- Scene Mode
- Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
- Portrait Mode: This gives the background a soft focus while capturing the subject clearly and sharply.
- Soft Skin Mode The camera detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than portrait mode.
- Transform Mode: Lets you adjust the image from wide to slim in 5 steps. For example, you can make a tall tree look even taller, or get a more dynamic view of a large building. You can see the actual effect on the LCD while shooting, so you don't need to worry about shooting or framing mistakes.
- Scenery Mode: Capture sweeping vistas in sharp focus.
- Sports Mode: Uses a high shutter speed to catch moving subjects.
- Night Portrait Mode: The MEGA O.I.S. minimizes hand motion at slow shutter speeds, to capture people and night landscapes clearly and beautifully.
- Night Scenery Mode: Allows you to record the nightscape vividly by reducing the shutter speed.
- Self-portrait Mode: This mode makes it easy for you to take pictures of yourself.
- Food Mode: Allows you to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc.
- Party Mode: Select this mode when you want to take pictures at a wedding reception, indoor party etc. By using the flash and slowing down the shutter speed, both people and the background can be recorded with a brightness close to real life.
- Candle Light Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. You can take successful pictures without using the flash.
- Fireworks Mode: his mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky.
- Starry Sky Mode: By making the shutter speed slower, allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in Night Scenery.
- Beach Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures on a beach. It prevents under exposure of the subject due to strong sunlight.
- Aerial Photo Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window.
- Snow Mode: This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
- High Sensitivity Mode: Select this mode for high-sensitivity processing. You can take pictures at ISO 6400 sensitivity equivalent.
- Baby1, Baby2 Modes: This mode takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When the flash is used, the light from it is weaker than usual. You can set the birthdays of two babies (Baby1 and Baby2). The baby's age can then be displayed when playing back pictures.
- Pet Mode: Because pets often won't hold still, this mode switches the camera to Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur. If you input your pet's date of birth, its age in months (at the time a photo was taken) is displayed when you view photos.
- Sunset Mode: Emphasizing red tones, this mode is designed to capture clear, vivid shots of colorful sunsets.
- Hi-speed Burst Mode: You can capture a crucial moment with perfect timing in 2-megapixel resolution (with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9) or 2.5-megapixel resolution (3:2) mode.
- Underwater Mode: This mode reduces excessive blue tone in underwater pictures.
- Pin Hole Mode: Get shots that look like you used a pinhole camera.
- Film Grain Mode: Get shots that look like you used monochrome high-sensitivity film.
- Flash-Burst Mode: Makes it possible to take consecutive shots with continuous flash emission.* This is ideal for photographing indoor events or sports scenes.
- 11-Area AF
- When using 11-area AF, the camera automatically determines the most appropriate AF area from the eleven points. This ensures accurate focusing even for difficult compositions. You can also select the AF setting from five patterns -- Face AF, 1-area high-speed AF, 1-area AF, Spot AF and AF Tracking -- according to your shooting situation. Plus, Quick AF makes sure you won't miss those sudden shooting opportunities.
- Quick AF
- The DMC-FX37 features Quick AF. Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take pictures quickly. Its super-fast focus is ideal for capturing quick photos of active children and pets. By setting the camera to Quick AF, pictures of sudden shooting opportunities won't be out of focus or blurry. Quick AF is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.
- Slideshow with Music
- The DMC-FX37 also features slideshows with music. Choose from four types of music: Natural, Slow, Swing and Urban. Transition effects timed to the music further enhance the slide changes. For musical slideshows created with the included PHOTOfunSTUDIO viewer 2.1E application, you can choose your favorite iTunes music file as background music.
- Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
- Allows unlimited consecutive shooting* up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card. The focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.
- High-speed Burst Mode
- In High-speed Burst Mode,* the DMC-FX37 can take approximately 6 frames per second at 3-megapixel resolution, which is highly sufficient for photo prints. This is great for capturing fast-moving sports or racing scenes. You can take a series of shots, then choose the one you like best and delete the rest. (Note that the focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.)
- HD Component Output
- The FX37, with 10.1 megapixels is capable of recording 720p High Definition motion pictures, and because of its support of SD Memory Cards, is easily compatible with Panasonic VIERA Plasma HDTVs that have an integrated SD Memory Card slot, so viewing photos is simple. The FX37 also has the ability to take 1920 x 1080 pixel High Definition-ready photos that perfectly fit a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV. With the newly added HD component output capability, users can also connect the TZ5 model to an HDTV via the optional Panasonic DMW-HDC2 HD Component Video Cable and watch a slideshow complete with mood-appropriate music, choosing from natural, slow, urban and swing.
- HD Motion Images (30/15 fps) with Audio
- The DMC-FX37 can record motion images in high-definition (1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-image recording even in low-light settings. When viewing, these high-resolution 16:9 motion images will provide a remarkable effect on your large-screen TV*. Stunning full-size movies can also be recorded in WVGA (848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps) or standard motion images in VGA (640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels at 30/10 fps). In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA, WVGA and HD, it is recommended you use a high-speed memory card with '10MB/s' or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded.
- 50MB Built-In Memory
- Take photos even when you don't have an SD/SDHC Memory Card on hand. The built-in memory holds up to 50 MB of image data, which you can later copy to an SD/SDHC Memory Card or PC. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like.
- Large-Capacity, High-Speed Storage Media -- SD and SDHC Memory Card
- The SD Memory Card, the TZ5's media for storing image data, offers both a large capacity and fast data transfer. The camera also accommodates large-capacity SDHC memory cards.
- Real-Time Histograms
- The DMC-FX37's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 3-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
- Still Image Recording with Audio
- You can take regular still pictures and add five seconds of audio to bring them to life. This way you can hear the opening notes of a band recital with an accompanying photo when you play it back on your computer.
