Panasonic DMC-FX500 10.1-megapixel Lumix

The 10.1-megapixel Panasonic DMC-FX500 Lumix digital camera features a 25mm ultra-wide angle Leica DC lens with 5x optical zoom. Touch-screen operation on a large, 3.0-inch LCD brings new enjoyment to digital photography and enables easy manual operation, which is a first for the FX series. A variety of advanced functions, including Intelligent Auto mode, HD motion picture recording and HD component output, and slideshows complete with music, also enrich the FX500 user experience.

The newly developed Leica DC lens with 5x optical zoom boasts an 25mm ultra-wide angle of view that captures almost double the recording area at the same shooting distance compared with a conventional 35mm lens. This advanced lens system includes 4 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, and a newly developed unevenly thick concave meniscus Extra High Refractive Index Aspherical (EA) lens. All this packs an unprecedented level of wide-angle performance into a slim camera, assuring minimal distortion even at its 25mm wide end and high picture quality.

For more intuitive operation, the DMC-FX500 has a hybrid control system that combines joystick control with touch-screen operation. Basic settings can be directly controlled by the joystick, and others extensive ones are finely adjusted by touch or by moving a slider on the screen with the finger or an included stylus-pen. Users can set the auto focus and exposure at the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject at that part while recording. In manual exposure mode, aperture and shutter speed can be adjusted by moving the slider. In playback mode, a new Easy Organization menu is provided to simplify image organizing. The user can quickly select an image to view by scrolling the thumbnails located below the main window, and then edit the image using the same touch menu interface.

Panasonic DMC-FX500 Lumix
5x Wide-Angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Zoom Lens
With the DMC-FX500, Panasonic has packaged a 25mm wide-angle* Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with f/2.8 brightness and a 5x optical zoom plus a 10.1-megapixel CCD into a body that is slim, stylish and conveniently compact. Comprising 7 elements in 6 groups, including 4 aspherical lenses with 6 aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit passes Leica's stringent standards and delivers an exceptional optical performance. Notably, a newly developed unevenly thick concave meniscus EA(extra high refractive index aspherical) lens makes it possible to achieve the 25mm ultra-wide-angle high optical performance while keeping the lens unit thin and the body slim. The 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens records almost double the viewing space at the same shooting distance compared to ordinary 35mm cameras. The 25mm wide-angle lens* (35mm film camera equivalent: 25-125mm) provides extra convenience in all shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at a party indoors or shooting a magnificent structure or scene while traveling. In addition,` a newly adopted iris diaphragm allows the users to adjust aperture at fine steps manually.

* Converted to standard 35mm film camera equivalent, at the maximum wide position.
5x Optical/4x Digital/20x Combined Zoom/35.6x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 5x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. The camera's 5x optical zoom and 4x digital zoom* may be used together to achieve up to 20x zoom power.

* As digital zoom increases, resolution significantly decreases.

Up to 8.9x Extended Optical Zoom
The DMC-FX500's 4x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/2.33" diagonal 10.1-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 8.9x power in 3-megapixel photos.
MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. The DMC-FX500 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality. You won't even notice it working -- all you'll see are the outstanding results!
Panasonic DMC-FX500 Lumix 2.5-inch LCD
3-inch Intelligent LCD Monitor With Wide Viewing Angle
The DMC-FX500 incorporates a large, easy-to-see 3-inch diagonal LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. This high-quality, 230,000-pixel display makes it easy to see your subject. The DMC-FX500 features the Intelligent LCD function. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in two steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes maximum 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd. The FX500 features a new panel, which boasts a wide viewing angle, for its Intelligent LCD to ensure clear, easy viewing in all lighting situations.
Hybrid Control System: Joystick and Large 3-inch Touchscreen Operation
The FX500 features a hybrid control system that combines a joystick control with a touchscreen operation. Basic settings can be directly controlled by the joystick, and other extensive ones are intuitively adjusted by touching or moving a slider on the screen with your finger or the included stylus pen. The icons and buttons of the DMC-FX500(FX520) were redesigned with the addition of the touch-screen. The Scene Mode and Category Playback icons are larger and more attractive. Various functions, including the screen for a slideshow with music, are displayed with large buttons on the touch-screen, making them easy to understand and use.
Touch Auto Focus snd Exposure
With the DMC-FX500, auto focus and exposure can be set at the desired part of the frame by simply touching the subject at that part to activate the AF/AE. This eliminates the need to make adjustments after pressing the shutter halfway, allowing you to set the desired composition and appropriate exposure easily and accurately. This is also helpful when you would like to designate the subject out of other objects in the frame, to set best appropriate focus and exposure right on it.
AF/AE Tracking
AF/AE tracking is new with the DMC-FX500. Once the AF/AE subject is selected by touch control, it continues to track the subject even if it moves. This is especially helpful for catching active children or pets. It also conveniently tracks the subject when the person taking the photo is riding on a moving object. And it minimizes the shutter time lag for spur-of-the-moment shots.
Panasonic DMC-FX500 Lumix 2.5-inch LCD
1/2.33" 10.1 Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
The DMC-FX500 features a larger 1/2.33-inch CCD that fully supports the camera's 10.1-megapixel resolution. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FX500's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
Venus Engine IV™ LSI
The DMC-FX500 features the Venus Engine IV. In the Venus Engine LSI, Panasonic improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels -- red, green and blue. And the Venus Engine IV even goes a step further. By adding the luminance signal from the green pixels in areas with horizontal or vertical lines, Panasonic has raised horizontal or vertical resolution by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible color bleeding. In the Venus Engine IV, the motion detection in the Intelligent ISO Control function has been further enhanced to suppress motion blur even more effectively.

An advanced noise reduction system detects chromatic noise and luminance noise separately. In addition, the Venus Engine IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. Together, they let you capture crisp, high-resolution images with minimal graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting. Fast Response - 0.005-Second Shutter Release Time Lag With a shutter release time lag of as little as 0.005 second*, Lumix is literally faster than the blink of an eye. This high-speed response makes it easier to capture the perfect expression on a child's face or a spectacular moment in a sports event.

* Not including the time for AF.

Intelligent Auto (iA) Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
With the DMC-FX35, you don't have to worry about changing a lot of settings every time conditions change. The FX35 not only eliminates blurring from hand-shake or subject movement, it also helps you capture perfect people shots by detecting the face and selecting the focus, exposure and scene mode that get the best results. And it's all automatic. The FX35 even adds a function that begins focusing as soon as you hold up the camera and continuously maintains the focus, so you're ready when the big moment comes.
Face Detection AF and AE
The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In Intelligent Auto (iA) mode, the camera automatically begins focusing without even having to press the shutter button halfway, so you can catch even sudden photo opportunities. The DMC-FX500 is also equipped with Digital Red-eye Correction. The camera takes care of the red-eye effect that often happens when shooting with a flash, to ensure attractive facial expression always.
Panasonic DMC-FX500 Lumix 2.5-inch LCD
Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
Intelligent Exposure
Intelligent Exposure function increases the exposure only in under-exposed areas by detecting the brightness level part-by-part in the picture. If the background includes the sky, which tends to be easily washed out, the camera automatically adjusts the aperture and shutter speed to keep the setting slightly under-exposed to prevent wash-out while brightening the darkened area by increasing the ISO only in that area. If the background of an indoor portrait receives insufficient lighting from a flash and becomes dark, the ISO sensitivity is raised in only the low-lit area to make it brighter without causing graininess in the subject's face. Intelligent Exposure function is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.
Intelligent Scene Selector
When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

* In iA mode, Night Portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off, and Night Scenery is not identified when the flash is set to Auto.

Quick AF
The DMC-FX500 features Quick AF. Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take pictures quickly. Its super-fast focus is ideal for capturing quick photos of active children and pets. By setting the camera to Quick AF, pictures of sudden shooting opportunities won't be out of focus or blurry. Quick AF is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.

The focus speed may be slower in dark surroundings.
Slideshow with Music
The DMC-FX500 also features slideshows with music. Choose from four types of music: Natural, Slow, Swing and Urban. Transition effects timed to the music further enhance the slide changes. For musical slideshows created with the included PHOTOfunSTUDIO viewer 2.1E application, you can choose your favorite iTunes music file as background music.
Unlimited Consecutive Shooting

* The speed of the consecutive shooting varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
High-speed Burst Mode
In High-speed Burst Mode,* the DMC-FX500 can take approximately 6 frames per second at 3-megapixel resolution, which is highly sufficient for photo prints. This is great for capturing fast-moving sports or racing scenes. You can take a series of shots, then choose the one you like best and delete the rest. (Note that the focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.)

* In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording. The consecutive shooting speed varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
HD Component Output
The FX500, with 10.1 megapixels is capable of recording 720p High Definition motion pictures, and because of its support of SD Memory Cards, is easily compatible with Panasonic VIERA Plasma HDTVs that have an integrated SD Memory Card slot, so viewing photos is simple. The FX500 also has the ability to take 1920 x 1080 pixel High Definition-ready photos that perfectly fit a wide-screen (16:9) HDTV. With the newly added HD component output capability, users can also connect the TZ5 model to an HDTV via the optional Panasonic DMW-HDC2 HD Component Video Cable and watch a slideshow complete with mood-appropriate music, choosing from natural, slow, urban and swing.
HD Motion Images (30/15 fps) with Audio
The DMC-FX500 can record motion images in high-definition (1280 x 720 pixels at 30 fps). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-image recording even in low-light settings. When viewing, these high-resolution 16:9 motion images will provide a remarkable effect on your large-screen TV*. Stunning full-size movies can also be recorded in WVGA (848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps) or standard motion images in VGA (640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels at 30/10 fps). In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA, WVGA and HD, it is recommended you use a high-speed memory card with '10MB/s' or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded.

* Requires an optional HD component cable DMW-HDC2 and that the TV you are connecting to has a component input terminal compatible with a 1080i signal.
50MB Built-In Memory
Take photos even when you don't have an SD/SDHC Memory Card on hand. The built-in memory holds up to 50 MB of image data, which you can later copy to an SD/SDHC Memory Card or PC. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like.
Large-Capacity, High-Speed Storage Media -- SD and SDHC Memory Card
The SD Memory Card, the TZ5's media for storing image data, offers both a large capacity and fast data transfer. The camera also accommodates large-capacity SDHC memory cards.
Real-Time Histograms
The DMC-FX500's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 3-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
