Panasonic DMC-FZ28S Lumix Digital Camera

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 is an 10.1 Megapixel compact camera with an impressive 18x optical zoom and a premium 27mm wide-angle Leica DC lens. The super-powerful 18x zoom lens makes it easy to pull in subjects from far away or to take dramatic close-ups. For an added boost, zoom power can be increased to 32.1x with the Extra Optical Zoom function (in 3-megapixel resolution mode). The 27mm wide-angle feature is ideal for both broad landscapes and tight indoor shots, letting photographers capture a wider view. The 10.1-megapixel resolution allows photos to be greatly enlarged while still retaining outstanding detail, or edited by trimming and enlarging parts of the photo to print.

Panasonic's iA (intelligent auto) mode, which makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos, has been further enhanced for the FZ28. The newly added AF Tracking function automatically tracks the subject once the AF has been set even if the subject moves around, making it easier to capture sharp, well-focused photos of decisive moments. The FZ28 continually monitors the light source and automatically activates the backlight compensation function if it detects that the light source is behind the subject. Face detection accuracy has also been increased, allowing continuous AF/AE adjustment even if a face moves or turns sideways to the camera. The Intelligent Exposure function helps capture natural-looking, true-to-life images by suppressing blocked shadows and blown highlights.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 camera sports advanced countermeasures against blurring -- the Intelligent Image Stabilization system, which combines MEGA Optical Image Stabilization (O.I.S.) to compensate for hand-shake and Intelligent ISO Control to detect and adjust for motion blur caused by subject movement. The Lumix DMC-FZ28 also is equipped with a large widescreen 2.7-inch, high-resolution LCD with 230,000 pixels, a 0.20-inch Electric Viewfinder with 201,600 pixels, f/2.8 brightness and is powered by the high-quality, high-performance, Venus Engine IV. Thanks to the Venus IV, the FZ28 can snap off consecutive shots at a fast maximum 13 frames per second for subjects with fast motion in High Speed Burst Shooting mode.*

Panasonic DMC-FZ28S Lumix Digital Camera
Wide-Angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Lens with 18x Optical Zoom Range
The DMC-FZ28 features a compact lens system featuring a 27mm-to-486mm (35mm equivalent) optical 18x zoom with eleven elements in eight groups, including two ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses and three aspherical lenses. The 27mm wide-angle (35mm equivalent) setting lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances. This powerful zoom also works during the motion picture recording. For macro shots, the wide-angle setting lets you shoot all the way down to less than an inch from your subject, and the telephoto setting can be used as close as 3.3 feet from your subject.

This zoom lens delivers picture quality high enough to pass Leica's stringent standards and delivers exceptional optical performance. The two ED lens elements minimize the chromatic aberration that is likely to occur in telephoto images. With the long zoom range from 27mm to 486mm, equivalent to 18x, the DMC-FZ28 can be the best suitable camera to take expansive scenery with dynamic perspective and a close-up of a distant subject, having the appealing angle of view. Leica Camera AG is a camera and lens maker lauded by photographers around the world. In every aspect of precision lens optics -- from polishing techniques to coating technologies to quality standards -- Leica Camera AG remains a world leader. Capture broad, sweeping vistas with wide-angle shots. Take portraits that fix the subject in a clear, sharp focus while applying a softer focus to the background. Or aim way into the distance and catch dynamic 18x telephoto shots. With the DC Vario-Elmarit lens, you have a powerful tool for capturing beautiful, expressive images.

32.1x Extra Optical Zoom
The DMC-FZ28's 18x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/2.33" diagonal 10.1-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 32.1x power in 3-megapixel photos, and up to 25.7x power in 5-megapixel photos.
18x Optical/4x Digital/72x Combined Zoom/115x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 18x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. There is even a 4x variable digital zoom*, which, combined with the optical zoom, digitally magnifies images up to 72 times their normal size.

* As digital zoom increases, resolution significantly decreases.

Panasonic DMC-FZ28S Lumix Digital Camera
2.7-inch High-Resolution Intelligent LCD and Electronic Viewfinder
The Lumix DMC-FZ28 boasts a larger 2.7-inch Intelligent LCD with a full 230,000 pixels resolution to offer even more comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The camera detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and boosts signals by pixel-mixed readout method when shooting under low-lit situation to secure a clear image in any circumstances. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd. The large 0.2-inch in-line Electronic Viewfinder also features high resolution with 201,600 pixels to provide easy, corner-to-corner focusing confirmation even in manual focus mode.
1/2.33" 10.1 Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
The 10.1 mega-pixel CCD (charged coupled device) converts optical data into digital information. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FZ28's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
Venus Engine IV™ LSI
A new image-processing LSI, Venus Engine IV, features more advanced signal processing technology for rendering even higher-quality images. The Parallel noise reduction in both luminance signal and chromatic signal processing systems, a technology established by the preceding Venus Engine III, gains a more sophisticated process. First, the luminance noise is two-dimensionally separated into high-frequency and low-frequency noises and only the low-frequency noise, which tends to be conspicuous, is eliminated without affecting the high-frequency noise that greatly influences resolution. Second, the information of the change point between colors is minutely stored for precise determination of edges, thus color bleeding is dramatically suppressed. This not only produces a clearer image in high ISO sensitivity recording, but also faithfully reproduces details in low-lit areas of pictures taken at low ISO sensitivity. It supports a High Sensitivity mode that lets the DMC-FZ28 record at a setting of up to ISO 6400, sensitive enough to capture subjects in near-total darkness without using a flash.*

With its multi-task image-processing capability, the Venus Engine IV also boasts outstanding response time. Shutter release time lag is as short as approximately 0.006 second. This fast response makes it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment shots. The Venus Engine IV also makes it possible to capture natural-looking, true-to-life images by suppressing blocked shadows and blown highlights with the Intelligent Exposure function. It now has high, standard and low settings of effect to match the shooting conditions and desired results. Furthermore, the engine elevates the detection accuracy and corrective effect in both Mega O.I.S., which prevents hand-shake, and Intelligent ISO Control, which suppresses motion blur. This high performance engine is also superior in its energy efficiency to extend the battery life up to 460 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.

*In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.

Panasonic DMC-FZ28S Lumix Digital Camera
Intelligent Auto Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 adds a new AF Tracking function to iA (Intelligent Auto) mode, which is a combination of functions that makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos. In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection, and Intelligent Exposure. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.
AF Tracking Function
With the new AF Tracking function, the user can "lock" the focus onto a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the user having to hold the shutter button halfway down. This makes it easier to capture the perfect moment clearly and in sharp focus when shooting images of a child, pet, sports or any scene with moving subjects and spur-of-the-moment action.
MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
Especially important for a high zoom camera, Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. This feature uses motion sensors, which detects even slight hand movement and integrally links the lens control to the motion of the camera to reduce jitter. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality. Panasonic's Mega O.I.S. has always offered modes 1 and 2, and now adds an AUTO mode to switch between the modes according to the zoom ratio being used.
Face Detection AF and AE
The Face Detection function can find up to 15 faces in the frame and adjusts the focus and exposure to capture them clearly and in sharp focus. Face detection accuracy has been increased in the FZ28 to now provide continuous adjustment of the focus and exposure even if the face is turned sideways to the camera. Combined with AF Tracking, Face Detection helps users capture special moments, including the fleeting expressions on the faces of active children. Plus, with the FZ28, the red-eye effect can be digitally corrected automatically when it occurs due to the use the flash.
Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control, the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
Advanced Scene Modes with Detailed Settings
You can select any of the scene modes used most often -- Scenery, Portrait, Sports, Close-up and Night Portrait -- right from the Mode dial. And with each of these modes, you can make more detailed settings to match the shooting conditions and subject. For example, in Sports Mode you can further select Normal, Indoor, Outdoor, or Creative.
Intelligent Scene Selector
When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

* In iA mode, Night Portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off, and Night Scenery is not identified when the flash is set to Auto.

HD Motion Picture Recording with Audio
Using the QuickTime® Motion JPEG format, Panasonic Lumix digital cameras can record moving images with audio. The DMC-FZ28 records dynamic HD motion pictures in 1280 x 720 at a smooth 30 fps, in addition to WVGA (848 x 480) and normal VGA (640 x 480).

In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording. When you set the motion picture quality to HD, WVGA and VGA, Panasonic recommends using a high-speed memory card with "10MB/s" or greater on the package. Some lens movement sounds may be recorded.
HD Component Output
With newly added HD component output capability, you can enjoy watching still and motion pictures in stunning HD quality taken by your DMC-FZ28 by simply connecting the camera to a TV via an optional component cable (DMW-HDC2).
Color Bracketing Function
A new color bracketing function records three types of images -- color, monochromatic and sepia -- at a single press of a button. Using this function, the photographer can capture a color photo and artistic monochrome photo at the same time while pressing the shutter button just once.
Panasonic DMC-FZ28S Lumix Digital Camera
Pop-Up Digital Flash
The FZ28 offers a number of flash modes, including Auto, Auto/Red-eye Reduction, Slow Sync./Red-eye Reduction for nighttime portraits, and Forced On/Off. Flash output adjustment is available in 1/3EV steps, ±2EV. The flash is more powerful than before and reaches a distance of 8.5 meters at the wide setting and 5.4 meters at the telephoto setting (ISO AUTO). It also has first curtain and second curtain synchro settings.
Quick and Smart AF and Easy Manual Focusing
Panasonic has dramatically revamped the focus system featured in the FZ28. The most significant improvement is the new Tracking AF. By keeping the focus locked on a moving subject such as a child or pet, this function makes it a lot easier for users to capture clear, perfectly focused shots at the perfect moment. To match the shooting situation and subject's position, the user can select from six auto-focusing methods: AF tracking, face detection, multi, 1-point high-speed, 1-point normal-speed, and spot. With the 1-point AF or spot AF method, the auto-focusing area can be chosen freely from the entire field of view with the joystick or cursor button. Various group area patterns can also be selected in the Multi method.

The Face Detection system helps the camera to recognize a human face to capture it bright and clear. Up to 15 human faces can be detected simultaneously. The detection keeps working on the faces even if subjects are moving so that the time for AF is minimized before you click away the shutter.

Manual focusing, which is a valuable tool for professional-level photography, is also easy thanks to the joystick. Instant switching between AF and MF is available with the independent AF/MF button. The DMC-FZ28 is also equipped with AF Macro button and it activates One-Shot AF function in MF mode with a single press of the button. In both AF/MF, the subject just 1cm away can be finely captured sparing no detail of it. You can experience the dynamic close-up of macro shots.

Manual Focus, Manual Focus Assist, Movable Manual Focus Assist
Select manual focus with the focus select button on the top of the camera, and use the joystick for super-smooth focusing. The FZ28 also has Manual Focus Assist. The image in the center of the LCD or EVF can be enlarged during manual focus for easier focusing. The entire frame image can also be enlarged. This is helpful for macros and other shots that require extra-precise focusing. Movable MF Assist lets you move the part that is enlarged by the MF Assist function to any area of the frame you want.
Image Leveling
Image Leveling is another function that improves post-shooting convenience. When a recorded image "leans" to the right or left because the camera was held at a slight angle, the Image Leveling function rotates the image to straighten it and crops the unnecessary edges*.

*Resolution decreases.
Burst Imaging
In the High-Speed Burst shooting mode, the DMC-FZ28 fires off an incredible maximum 13 shots per second*. The shutter mechanism of the FZ28 is mechanical, which allows users to take beautiful pictures in motion with minimal smearing and distortion effects that is often seen when using the electronic shutter mechanism. Newly added Flash Burst mode makes it possible to take continuous shooting with continuous emission of flash**. In burst shooting mode, the DMC-FZ28 can snap approx. 2.5 shots per second at full resolution.***

*In speed priority mode; 13 fps in 2-megapixel (16:9) recording, 12 fps in 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 11 fps in 3-megapixel (4:3)
***Max. 5 images. In 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording.
****Max. 5 images in standard mode/ 3 images in fine mode.
Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
Allows unlimited consecutive shooting* up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card. The focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.

* The speed of the consecutive shooting varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
Instant Close-ups with a Single Switch
Regardless of the Mode Dial setting, you can take macro shots instantly by flicking the switch on the side of the lens to the AF Macro setting. This lets you get as close as 0.4-inch (1cm) from your subject (at the maximum wide-angle setting).
50MB Built-In Memory
Take photos even when you don't have an SD/SDHC Memory Card on hand. The built-in memory holds up to 40 MB of image data, which you can later copy to an SD/SDHC Memory Card or PC. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like.

1/3 EV steps up to ±2 EV
Auto Exposure Bracketing
Automatically shoot three frames with graduated exposure, one shot overexposed, one shot at correct exposure, one shot unedrexposed. Bracketing amount can be set for 1/3 to 1 EV steps.
Intelligent Multiple Metering Mode Plus Center-Weighted and Spot Metering
The FZ28's light metering system divides the image into 60 blocks, for improved accuracy in determining brightness, color temperature, and focus information. It also determines the best exposure setting in difficult shooting conditions, such as when there is backlighting. Spot Mode lets you match the exposure to a particular part of the image -- useful for subjects with large brightness variations. Center-weighted and Spot metering is also available.
Real-Time Histograms
The DMC-FZ28's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 2-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
