The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, the successor to the critically acclaimed DMC-FZ30, featuring 10.1 megapixels and Panasonic's revolutionary Intelligent ISO Control technology which compensates for subject movement to decrease image blurriness -- an industry first. The Panasonic DMC-FZ50 with MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) features a powerful 12x optical zoom (equivalent to 35 mm to 420 mm on a 35 mm film camera) f/2.8 LEICA DC lens. It also boasts a 10.1-megapixel high resolution CCD for its image sensor and Venus Engine III for the image processing LSI, making it possible to record an image at a maximum ISO 1600 high sensitivity setting at full resolution. Furthermore, by dramatically reducing noise levels, the DMC-FZ50 is able to capture 10.1-megapixel full resolution images even in high sensitivity recordings.
Panasonic is synonymous with clear, stable picture taking, and incorporates MEGA Optical Image Stabilization into all of its digital cameras. The revolutionary new Intelligent ISO Control (IIC) feature on Panasonic's Lumix cameras signals the arrival of a new level of photographic excellence. IIC allows high sensitivity recording at full resolution (800 ISO maximum) made possible by the advanced image processing LSI Venus Engine III. When set to the IIC, the Venus Engine III detects the subject's movement and adjusts the ISO setting and shutter speed to best suit the movement and the light condition automatically. Panasonic's intelligent image stabilizing system allows users to take clear, crisp images in just about any situation.
Among the enhancements from its predecessor, the DMC-FZ50 is equipped with a new Function Button which serves as a shortcut to quickly set frequently-used settings such as recording image size, light metering, AF area, white balance, and ISO sensitivity. A newly incorporated custom setting function memorizes the user's frequent setting patterns so they can be instantly applied by simply selecting this function with the mode dial. The FZ50 also has a 2-inch LCD which flips out to 180 degrees, making it easier to view even when shooting from high or low angles. The DMC-FZ50 is now compatible with TTL external flashes creating greater flexibility for shooting in a wider range of conditions. The long battery life will allow the user to shoot approximately 360 images on one charge* (CIPA), yet another way the FZ50 stakes its claim to a premium spot in the digital camera market.

- Leica DC Vario-Elmarit Lens with 12x Optical Zoom Range
- Leica Camera AG is a camera and lens maker lauded by photographers around the world. In every aspect of precision lens optics -- from polishing techniques to coating technologies to quality standards -- Leica Camera AG remains a world leader.
The DMC-FZ50's DC Vario-Elmarit lens features 14 elements in 10 groups including 3 aspherical lenses and an extra-low dispersion (ED) lens to minimize color aberration (color bleeding) -- a common problem in high-magnification / large aperture lenses. ED lenses are typically exchangeable lenses designed for single-lens reflex cameras and high-end, professional cameras.
With a focal distance of 7.4-88.8mm (equivalent to a 35mm - 420mm lens on a 35mm camera) and F2.8-F3.7 brightness, this exciting lens puts you in control of a wide variety of photo techniques. Capture broad, sweeping vistas with wide-angle shots. Take portraits that fix the subject in a clear, sharp focus while applying a softer focus to the background. Or aim way into the distance and catch dynamic 12x telephoto shots. With the DC Vario-Elmarit lens, you have a powerful tool for capturing beautiful, expressive images.
- 21.4x Extended Optical Zoom
- The DMC-FZ50's 12x optical zoom combines with the large, 1/1.8" diagonal 10-megapixel CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The new Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 21.4x power in 3-megapixel photos, and up to 17.1x power in 5-megapixel photos.
- 12x Optical/4x Digital/48x Combined Zoom/85.5x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 12x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. There is even a 4x variable digital zoom*, which, combined with the optical zoom, digitally magnifies images up to 48 times their normal size.
- 1/1.8" 10.4 Total Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
- The 10 mega-pixel CCD (charged coupled device) converts optical data into digital information. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FZ50's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
- Venus Engine III™ LSI
- The DMC-FZ50 adopts the Venus Engine III to realize high sensitivity recording at max. ISO 1600 at full resolution. The noise reduction system is greatly improved by removing noise at the processing stages in series. First, critical noise is roughly undraped and the chromatic noise and the luminance noise are separated to respectively go through the supplemental noise reduction process so that the remaining noise is appropriately minimized. In addition, chromatic aberration is also reduced so beautiful images are assured even in telephoto shooting.
With its multi-task image processing capability, the Venus Engine III also boasts outstanding response time with an industry-leading level of shutter release time lag of as short as 0.009 sec*. minimum and the shutter interval of 0.8 sec*. Together with the fast startup time of approx.0.7 sec., the quick response of DMC-FZ50 enables easy capture of those spur-of-the-moment shots.
Despite the significantly increased performance of the camera, the Venus Engine III consumes only 80% of the power utilized by the Venus Engine II and is able to achieve a longer battery life of approx. 360 pictures** on a single charge.
- MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
- Especially important for a high zoom camera, Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. This feature uses motion sensors, which detects even slight hand movement and integrally links the lens control to the motion of the camera to reduce jitter. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality.
- Free-Angle 2" Diagonal High-Resolution Color LCD Monitor
- Change the angle of the high-resolution 207,000-pixel 2.0" diagonal LCD monitor any way you like. You get the flexibility to catch a high-angle shot over a crowd, or a low-angle shot of flowers in a garden, all with a comfortable posture.
- Five Auto Focus Modes
- In addition to five auto focus modes (1-point, 3-point high-speed, 9-point, spot AF, and 1-point high-speed AF), the Continuous AF function keeps moving subjects in sharp focus, and the AF Assist Lamp helps in dim lighting. This all adds up to easy, accurate focusing.
- Manual Focus and Zoom Rings, Manual Focus Assist
- The manual focus ring lets you focus on whatever part of your subject you wish, and the zoom ring lets you zoom in and out easily and accurately as you compose the perfect shot. They're both fast, so you can capture moving subjects in your composition. The DMC-FZ50's manual focus ring lets you manually adjust the focus from 11.8 inches (0.3m) to infinity. The FZ50 also has Manual Focus Assist, a function that shows an enlarged image of the subject's center in the viewfinder.
- Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
- Allows unlimited consecutive shooting up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card.
- Mega Burst™ Imaging
- Incredibly responsive, the DMC-FZ50 captures consecutive shots nearly as quickly as a motor-driven film camera. As soon as the camera's CCD captures the image signal, Panasonic's multi-tasking Venus Engine LSI simultaneously displays images on the LCD while writing data to the memory card, significantly reducing lag time between shots. To capture sudden events as they unfold, Panasonic's exclusive MEGA BURST recording feature enables consecutive rapid-fire shooting. You can snap off consecutive shots at 2 frames per second with full resolution.*
- Instant Close-ups with a Single Switch
- Regardless of the Mode Dial setting, you can take macro shots instantly by flicking the switch on the side of the lens to the AF Macro setting. This lets you get as close as 2 inches (5cm) from your subject (at the maximum wide-angle setting).
- ISO Sensitivity Settings
- Adjust light-receiving sensitivity just like with a film camera. Available settings: Auto and ISO 100, 200, 400, 800 and 1600 equivalents (3200 ISO equivalent in High Sensitivity Mode).
- Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
- The revolutionary Intelligent ISO Control (IIC) feature on Panasonic's LUMIX cameras signals the arrival of a new level of photographic excellence.

- Intelligent Multiple Metering Mode Plus Center-Weighted and Spot Metering
- The FZ50's light metering system divides the image into 60 blocks, for improved accuracy in determining brightness, color temperature, and focus information. It also determines the best exposure setting in difficult shooting conditions, such as when there is backlighting. Spot Mode lets you match the exposure to a particular part of the image -- useful for subjects with large brightness variations. Center-weighted and Spot metering is also available.
- Real-Time Histograms
- The DMC-FZ50's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 2-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
