Features in Detail | Recommended Accessories | Enlarged Image

The 8.1-megapixel Panasonic DMC-LZ8 Lumix digital camera is a full-featured and high-performing digital cameras featuring a Leica DC VARIO-ELMAR lens and 32mm wide-angle shooting (35mm equivalent). The LZ8 also boasts manual controls, convenient AA-battery operation, a 5x optical zoom, Intelligent Auto Mode and Panasonic's Venus Engine IV -- the new high-speed, image-processing LSI. The LZ8 is perfect for photographers who expect a digital camera that blends power, performance and quality, helping them to maximize the digital photography experience. With the LZ8's 32mm wide-angle lens users can capture larger group photos or more expansive scenic shots.

To provide digital photographers with added creative elements and performance, the DMC-LZ8 Lumix sports manual control over aperture and shutter speed, thanks to the camera's newly-adopted iris. When shooting manually, users can choose from three modes: A-aperture priority, S-shutter speed priority and M-manual and enjoy added control and creativity normally reserved for higher end models. Also new to the LZ-Series is Advanced Scene Mode -- a feature that gives photographers manual control using some of the frequently-used scene modes: Portrait, Sports, Landscape and Night portrait. While in Advanced Scene Mode, when selecting the Portrait or Sports mode, the user is then presented with additional settings, with the option of choosing outdoor or indoor. When selecting Landscape mode, there are options to specify if the shot is nature or architecture. Budding photographers who desire even more artistic freedom can choose Creative mode, which adds more manual controls over an aperture or a shutter speed.

The Lumix LZ8 also features Panasonic's Intelligent Auto Mode, which is comprised of five distinct technologies designed to provide users with intuitive and automatic camera adjustments, regardless of the shooting condition and without the user having to do anything manually. The LZ8 also features a 230,000-dot high-resolution LCD, complete with the new Intelligent LCD, meaning the 2.5-inch LCD screen detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level to offer optimal clarity in any situation, whether dark or light; indoors or outdoors. 5x Wide-Angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar Zoom Lens
The LZ-Series, which is widely known for its powerful zoom, now features a Leica DC lens. With the DMC-LZ8, Panasonic has packaged a 32mm wide-angle* Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens with f/3.3 brightness and a 5x optical zoom plus an 8.1-megapixel CCD into a body that is slim, stylish and conveniently compact. The lens unit comprises of seven elements in six groups, including three aspherical lenses to achieve high optical performance while maintaining compactness. Naturally, the lens meets Leica's stringent standards. his low-distortion, high-resolution lens renders 30mm wide-angle images* with remarkable, corner-to-corner clarity. The 32mm wide-angle lens* provides extra convenience in all shooting situations, like when you're photographing a group of people at a party indoors or shooting a magnificent structure or scene while traveling. The lens lets you easily capture large groups of people indoors or expansive architectural structures and scenes with dynamic width and rich perspective, even from short distances.

* Converted to standard 35mm film camera equivalent, at the maximum wide position.
5x Optical/4x Digital/8.0x Maximum Extra Optical Zoom/31.9x Maximum Combined Zoom
The DMC-LZ8 is equipped with a 5x optical zoom lens (35mm equivalent: 32 - 160mm). The Extra Optical Zoom function uses the center part of the CCD to extend this 5x zoom ratio to powerful 8.0x zoom (35mm equivalent: 256mm) at a resolution of 3-megapixel or less. Adding the Extra Optical Zoom to the 4x digital zoom* extends the total zooming power to a maximum of 31.9x (35mm equivalent: 1,020mm).

* As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.
Easy Zoom
Now, zooming is even easier. Even when the zoom is set to a position lower than 6x, the first press of the Easy Zoom button immediately gives you the maximum 5x power of the optical zoom. A second press delivers the maximum 8.0x power of the Extra Optical Zoom.* This lets you bring your subject right up close, easily and comfortably.

* If the resolution is set to a level higher than 3-megapixel, the camera will automatically change it to 3-megapixel. Pressing the button a third time will return the lens to the wide-end (1x) position, and reset the resolution to the ordinary level. If the resolution is set to 3-megapixel or less, the image will be taken at the set level.
MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
When using a small, lightweight camera, zooming in can accentuate every little movement of the hand. That's why Panasonic incorporates its MEGA O.I.S into every Lumix camera. It enables you to take clear, distortion-free pictures, even ultra-telephoto or macro shots of distant or moving subjects, or shots taken in low lighting conditions. The DMC-LZ8 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working--all you'll see are the outstanding results!
Panasonic DMC-LZ8 Lumix Digital Camera
2.5" Intelligent LCD Monitor With High Angle Mode
The DMC-LZ8 incorporates a large, easy-to-see 2.5-inch diagonal LCD for comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. This high-quality, 230,000-pixel display makes it easy to see your subject. The DMC-LZ8 features the Intelligent LCD function. The DMC-LZ8 features an Intelligent LCD function that automatically controls the LCD brightness in 12 steps. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in three steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 12 steps, the LCD backlight becomes maximum 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The High Angle mode, which can be accessed quickly and easily via a dedicated button, makes the LCD screen extremely easy to view when the camera is held high, such as to shoot over a crowd.
1/2.5" 8.1 Megapixel CCD With Primary Color Filter
The DMC-LZ8 features a 1/2.5-inch CCD that fully supports the camera's 8.1-megapixel resolution. It lets you capture crisp, clear images in high resolution, and helps bring out a full range of expressive color and detail. The DMC-FS5's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
Slideshow with Music
The DMC-LZ8 also features slideshows with music. Choose from four types of music: Natural, Slow, Swing and Urban. Transition effects timed to the music further enhance the slide changes.
Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
While hand-shake is the single biggest cause of blurry images, it is not the only one. Another problem is the motion blur that can occur when a subject moves as the shot is being snapped. Incorporating Panasonic's new Intelligent ISO Control, Lumix cameras are the first in the world to fight motion blur. With Intelligent Image Stabilization -- Mega O.I.S. to compensate for hand-shake plus Intelligent ISO Control to prevent motion blur -- Panasonic has taken image stabilisation a leap forward and equipped the new Lumix DMC-TZ3 with the industry's most advanced countermeasures against blurring.

The IIC system detects whether or not the subject is moving. If it is, the system automatically raises the ISO setting accordingly, allowing the camera to shoot at a higher shutter speed. If the subject is not moving, the camera shoots at a low ISO setting and captures beautiful, natural-looking images. Intelligent ISO Control is included as one of the corrections in certain scene modes used to shoot subjects that are often moving, such as Sports, Baby and the newly added Pet mode. Simply select the mode that best suits the subject, and Intelligent ISO Control provides the optimal corrections, making it easy to capture crisp, clear photos.

Extended Shooting from Two "AA" Alkaline Batteries
For convenience, the DMC-LZ8 can be powered by two AA size batteries. Because AA size batteries can be purchased almost anywhere, you don't have to worry about suddenly running out of battery power. This is great both for taking everyday snapshots and when you are traveling. The camera comes with two AA alkaline batteries, which let you take about 180 photos.*

* CIPA standard measurement method, using SD Memory Card and the supplied batteries. CIPA (Camera & Imaging Products Association) creates standards for measuring battery life. The CIPA standard measurement method: Switch on the power and LCD, begin shooting in 30 seconds, switch between telephoto and wide-angle every 30 seconds, fire the flash every other shot. After every 10 shots, switch off the camera unit until the battery cools. Ambient conditions: 73.4 degrees Farenheit, 50 humidity.

Panasonic DMC-LZ8 Lumix Digital Camera
Venus Engine IV™ LSI
The DMC-LZ8 features the Venus Engine IV. In the Venus Engine LSI, Panasonic improved diagonal resolution by 50% over earlier models by extracting luminance signals from all of the pixels -- red, green and blue. And the Venus Engine IV even goes a step further. By adding the luminance signal from the green pixels in areas with horizontal or vertical lines, Panasonic has raised horizontal or vertical resolution by about 10%. Images are rendered in fine detail and without visible color bleeding. In the Venus Engine IV, the motion detection in the Intelligent ISO Control function has been further enhanced to suppress motion blur even more effectively.

An advanced noise reduction system detects chromatic noise and luminance noise separately. In addition, the Venus Engine IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. Together, they let you capture crisp, high-resolution images with minimal graininess even when shooting at a high ISO setting. Fast Response - 0.005-Second Shutter Release Time Lag With a shutter release time lag of as little as 0.005 second*, Lumix is literally faster than the blink of an eye. This high-speed response makes it easier to capture the perfect expression on a child's face or a spectacular moment in a sports event.

* Not including the time for AF.

Face Detection AF and AE
The Face Detection function detects faces anywhere in the frame and automatically chooses the optimal focus and exposure. It detects up to 15 faces in a photo, and automatically readjusts the settings if their positions change. In Intelligent Auto (iA) mode, the camera automatically begins focusing without even having to press the shutter button halfway, so you can catch even sudden photo opportunities.
Program Auto Exposure, Aperture and Shutter Priority, Manual Exposure Modes
The DMC-LZ8 features a full manual function. Using Aperture-Priority, which creates a soft-focused background effect or Shutter-Priority that, for example, produces a dynamic rendering of streaming water, you can explore your own creative expression at will. Manual operation requires only three simple steps: set the Mode Dial to the A/S/M Mode position, select the mode you want, then use the Exposure button to make any necessary adjustments. The DMC-LZ8's simple operation opens the door to a creative new world of photography.
  • P Mode (Program AE): The camera makes the optimal aperture and shutter speed settings for you. You can adjust the white balance, ISO sensitivity, and other settings to give a photo a more expressive look.
  • A (Aperture Priority) Mode: You select the aperture and the camera automatically sets the shutter speed according to the subject's brightness.
  • S (Shutter Priority) Mode: You select the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture according to the subject's brightness.
  • M (Manual Exposure) Mode: Enjoy full exposure control and creativity normally reserved for higher end models. The Manual Exposure Assist function shows how much your setting differs from the setting the camera considers optimal.
  • Intelligent Auto Mode: Comprised of five distinct technologies designed to provide users with intuitive and automatic camera adjustments, regardless of the shooting condition and without the user having to do anything manually.
  • Motion Picture Mode: You can shoot smooth moving images at 30 frames/sec, complete with sound, in WVGA (848 x 480 pixels) or VGA size (640 x 480 pixels).
  • 19 Scene Modes
19 Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
  • Portrait Mode: This mode helps you take beautiful portraits by adjusting the exposure and coloration to produce natural, true-to-life skin tones.
  • Scenery Mode: This mode provides quick focusing and crisp detail, for beautiful photos of scenery.
  • Sports Mode: Uses a high shutter speed to catch moving subjects.
  • Night Portrait Mode: Captures people and night landscapes clearly and beautifully.
  • Self-portrait Mode: Aim the camera at yourself, wait for the LED to light up (indicating that you're in focus), and take the shot.
  • Food Mode This mode allows you to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc.
  • Party Mode: Makes it possible to take clear, beautiful pictures by capturing the warm and rich nuances of light and atmosphere.
  • Candle Light Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. You can take successful pictures without using the flash.
  • Fireworks Mode: his mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky.
  • Starry Sky Mode: By making the shutter speed slower, this mode allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in [NIGHT SCENERY].
  • Beach Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures on a beach. It prevents under exposure of the subject due to strong sunlight.
  • Snow Mode: This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
  • Aerial Photo Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window.
  • Baby1, Baby2 Modes: This mode takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When the flash is used, the light from it is weaker than usual. You can set the birthdays of two babies (Baby1 and Baby2). The baby's age can then be displayed when playing back pictures.
  • High Sensitivity Mode: Select this mode for high-sensitivity processing. You can take pictures at ISO 6400 sensitivity.
  • Pet Mode: Because pets often won't hold still, this mode switches the camera to Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur. If you input your pet's date of birth, its age in months (at the time a photo was taken) is displayed when you view photos.
  • Sunset Mode: Emphasizing red tones, this mode is designed to capture clear, vivid shots of colorful sunsets.
  • Hi-speed Burst Mode: You can capture a crucial moment with perfect timing in 2-megapixel resolution (with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9) or 2.5-megapixel resolution (3:2) mode.
Intelligent Scene Selector
When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject. With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.

* In iA mode, Night Portrait is not identified when the flash is turned off, and Night Scenery is not identified when the flash is set to Auto.
9-Point AF
The number of AF areas has been increased to nine. The camera automatically determines the most appropriate AF area from the nine points. This ensures accurate focusing even for difficult compositions. You can also select the AF setting from five patterns -- Face AF, 3-area high-speed AF, 1-area high-speed AF and 1-area AF, Spot AF -- according to your shooting situation. Plus, Quick AF makes sure you won't miss those sudden shooting opportunities.
Quick AF
The DMC-FS20 features Quick AF. Ordinary AF is activated when the shutter button is pressed half-way, while Quick AF starts operating as soon as the camera is pointed toward a subject. This dramatically reduces the shutter delay time and lets you take pictures quickly. Its super-fast focus is ideal for capturing quick photos of active children and pets. By setting the camera to Quick AF, pictures of sudden shooting opportunities won't be out of focus or blurry. Quick AF is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode.

The focus speed may be slower in dark surroundings.
Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
Allows unlimited consecutive shooting* up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card. The focus and exposure are fixed at the first frame.

* The speed of the consecutive shooting varies depending on the memory card. The number of recordable picture depends on the memory card size, battery life, picture size, and compression.
Mega Burst™ Imaging
Just keep the shutter button pressed to fire off consecutive shots (2.5 frames per second with full resolution*) of a moving subject or a person's changing facial expression. Then save only the best ones. With a digital camera, you can just delete any shots you don't want. In spite of its high-resolution, the DMC-LZ8 lets you snap off consecutive shooting at approx. 2.5 frames per second with full resolution.* By using the Scene Mode's High-speed Burst setting, you can enjoy extremely fast consecutive shooting of up to approx. 5.5 frames per second in 2-megapixel and 2.5-megapixel recording.

* Max. 7 images in Standard mode/4 images in Fine mode.
ISO 6400 Equivalent High Sensitivity Mode
When there's not a lot of light or you're using a slow shutter speed, hand movement isn't the only potential problem. There's also "motion blur" -- the blurring that can result if your subject like children or pets move even a little in low lighting. That's why Panasonic added a High Sensitivity mode that allows you to shoot at up to ISO 6400 by using the pixel-mixed readout method, effectively raising the shutter speed. It not only minimizes motion blur, it also lets you take clearer, sharper shots in dim lighting without using a flash. The picture quality is good enough for printing at the ordinary 4" x 6" (10 x 15 cm) size.
20MB Built-In Memory
Take photos even when you don't have an SD Memory Card on hand. The built-in memory holds up to 20MB* of image data, which you can later upload to an SD Memory Card or PC. You can also download images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like.

* MB equals one million bytes. Usable capacity will be less.

Large-Capacity, High-Speed Storage Media -- SD and SDHC Memory Card
The SD Memory Card, the LZ8's optional media for storing image data, offers both a large capacity and fast data transfer. The camera accepts large capacity SDHC memory cards, giving the user more flexibility in shooting and recording. MultimediaCard format memory may also be used.
PictBridge Direct Print Compatibility
The PictBridge standard lets you print directly on a compatible digital printer. Print size, layout, date and other settings can be made with the camera.
Motion Image Recording with Audio
Using the QuickTime® Motion JPEG format, Panasonic Lumix digital cameras can record moving images with audio at 30 or 10 frames per second and a resolution of 640 x 480, 848 x 480 (widescreen) or 320 x 240 pixels.

In Motion Picture Mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SD/SDHC Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion image recording.) When you set the picture quality to 30fps VGA or 30fps WVGA, Panasonic recommend using a high-speed SD/SDHC Memory Card with "10 MB/s" or greater displayed on the package.
Auto Angle Detection
Auto angle detection records whether an image was taken horizontally or vertically and displays it accordingly, whether viewed on the camera's LCD or on a connected TV.
Real-Time Histograms
The DMC-LZ8K's new histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. This graph, which can be displayed in the LCD monitor as you line up the shot, shows the status of the exposure and contrast in real-time.
Composition Guide Lines
Displayed in the LCD, these thin horizontal and vertical lines make it easy for you to compose your shots or to hold the camera level.
Zoom Auto Review
Right after you shoot, see an enlarged view of the image.
White Balance Settings
Choose from five white balance fine adjustment settings: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Halogen, and White Set. When there are several different light sources and it's difficult to get the exact coloration you want, you can also fine-tune the photo by adding bluish or reddish tones, up to ±10 steps*.

* Fine-tuning is not possible in Auto mode

2-Second/10-Second Self-Timer
Why should you always be the photographer, and never the subject? Once you set the camera to self-time mode, you have up to ten seconds to pose for the picture.
Trimming and Resizing
Lets you trim the image, or reduce the amount of image data.
Intelligent Multiple Metering
The LZ8K's light metering system divides the image into 60 blocks, for improved accuracy in determining brightness, color temperature, and focus information. It also determines the best exposure setting in difficult shooting conditions, such as when there is backlighting.
Shutter Speeds from 8 Seconds - 1/2,000 Second
Starry Sky Mode adds 15-, 30- and 60-second exposures.
