The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR3 is a fully-featured digital camera complete with AVCHD Lite High Defintion (HD) video recording capabilities, a25mm ultra-wide-angle Leica lens and a powerful 8x optical zoom. The ZR3 givess users a wide-range of shooting options in a slim body small enough to fit in a pocket or small purse. Intelligent Zoom extends the Lumix ZR3's zoom to an impressive 10x. The Panasonic Lumix ZR3's incredible 8x optical zoom is not found on many conventional point-and-shoot cameras, especially ones that are approximately 1-inch thick.
With the powerful zoom, users will be thrilled with the close-up shots they are able to take. And for an added boost, zoom power can be increased to 10x with Panasonic's new Intelligent Zoom function, which takes advantage of the newly-added Intelligent Resolution technology. Intelligent Resolution, a component of Intelligent Auto mode, helps to maintain optimal picture quality by capturing higher quality signal processing and through the detection of three areas - outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation -- examining them pixel by pixel to enhance any degradation created during the digital zoom process or in high-sensitivity shooting. As a result of Intelligent Resolution, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and video recording.

- 25mm Ultra Wide-angle Leica DC Lens With 8x Optical Wide-Angle Zoom
- Leica Camera AG is a camera and lens maker lauded by photographers around the world. In every aspect of precision lens optics -- from polishing techniques to coating technologies to quality standards -- Leica Camera AG remains a world leader. Leica's multi-coating lens process for glare reduction helps to eliminate image fogging and ghosting when shooting in extremely bright light.
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR3 digital camera features a powerful zoom in a remarkably slim and compact body. The lens unit includes the world's first 0.3mm super-thin aspherical lens and the industry's first 0.3mm spherical lens. This cutting-edge design allows Panasonic to fit this high-performance 25mm ultra wide-angle 8x optical zoom lens into the ZR3's slim and compact body. The powerful 8x zoom makes it easy to pull in subjects from far away. The 25mm ultra wide-angle lens (35mm equivalent) is ideal for both broad landscapes and tight indoor shots, letting photographers capture a wider view.
- POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
- Especially important for a high zoom camera, Panasonic's advanced POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. This feature uses motion sensors, which detects even slight hand movement and integrally links the lens control to the motion of the camera to reduce jitter. Unlike digital image stabilization systems, this optical system provides precise compensation with no degradation in image quality. POWER O.I.S. is automatically turned on in the IA Mode and can be turned on or off in the P/A/S/M Mode or some Scene Modes.
POWER O.I.S. nearly doubles the hand-shake correction power of conventional MEGA O.I.S. Panasonic has worked on the low-frequency vibration hand-shake component, which is physically generated when pressing the shutter button or when shooting at night with a slow shutter speed. You get bright photos without blurring even from handheld shooting at slow shutter speeds. POWER O.I.S. is extremely effective for high-power zoom shots, and clearly captures subjects in the ultra-telephoto range, which used to require a tripod.
- 10x Intelligent Zoom / 16.9x Extended Optical Zoom
- Thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology, the Intelligent Zoom available with the DMC-ZR3 extends the zoom ratio by approx. 1.3x maintaining the picture quality even combining a digital zoom. This means the 8x optical can virtually extend to 10x equivalent. The DMC-ZR3's 8x optical zoom combines with the 1/2.33" diagonal 14.1-megapixel effective CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extra Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 16.9x power in photos at a resolution of 3 megapixels or less.
- 8x Optical/4x Digital/32x Combined Zoom/84.4x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with an 8x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. There is even a 4x variable digital zoom*, which, combined with the optical zoom, digitally magnifies images up to 32 times their normal size.
- 2.7-inch High-Resolution Intelligent LCD
- The Lumix DMC-ZR3 boasts a larger 2.7-inch Intelligent LCD with a full 230,000 pixels resolution to offer even more comfortable viewing while both monitoring shots and playing back the results. The camera detects the light condition and automatically boosts the LCD backlighting by 40% when shooting outdoors in bright sunshine, and boosts signals by pixel-mixed readout method when shooting under low-lit situation to secure a clear image in any circumstances.
- AVCHD Lite: Beautiful HD motion images, Extended Shooting Time
- There are many chances for you to record both photos and movies in everyday life, but you cannot always take all of your equipment with you. The Lumix DMC-ZR3 lets you do exactly that, and is especially suitable for recording short movies on the fly, with high-definition quality and snapshot ease. This is all made possible by the world's first (as of January 27, 2009) way of recording movies by digital still camera -- AVCHD Lite. AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) is a practical format exclusively developed for recording High Definition motion pictures. AVCHD Lite is a subset of the AVCHD format for digital cameras with HD video recording of 720P. Compared to the Motion JPEG which records full information of every frame to make a sequence of still images, the AVCHD Lite records motion images with high-efficient compression optimized exclusively for motion picture recording. As a result, stunningly beautiful movie even in High Definition can be recorded with almost double length.
The popular iA (Intelligent Auto) is also available in motion image recording. POWER Optical Image Stabilizer (O.I.S.) helps prevent handshake when using high-powered zoom. Face Detection automatically detects a face in the frame and adjusts focus, exposure, contrast, and skin complexion on it so it always turns out beautifully. Intelligent Exposure continually checks the ambient light level and adjusts the exposure setting as conditions change to prevent blown highlights and blocked shadows. And Intelligent Scene Selector automatically switches between Normal, Portrait, Macro, Scenery, and Low Light modes according to the situation to optimize visual quality.
Motion image recording can be started by pressing a dedicated button on the camera's back panel -- an extremely quick, convenient way to start motion image recording. Most of the camera's settings will be carried over when switched to motion picture recording. The 4.6x optical zoom is available in movie recording, too. A Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind. The ZR3 also provides a Color mode and carries over 17 different scene modes from photo scene modes in movie recording. In AVCHD Lite recording, you can select from three levels of motion image quality: SH (17 Mbps), H (13 Mbps) and L (9 Mbps).
- Dolby Digital Audio
- The DMC-ZR3 features Dolby Digital Creator to record high quality audio, so you can match the beautiful motion images with outstanding sound. In addition, a Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind.
- Venus Engine HD II LSI
- The high-speed, high-performance Venus Engine HD has been re-engineered to compile the new image processing technology Intelligent Resolution. It enables the recording of beautiful photo and high-definition movie with higher quality signal processing. The Venus Engine HD II also supports the recording of beautiful, high-definition motion images in AVCHD Lite with its higher processing speed using twin CPUs. An advanced noise reduction system in the Venus Engine HD II applies noise reduction (NR) to luminance noise and chromatic noise separately. As a result, beautiful images with minimal noise can be reproduced all the way up to ISO 1600 high sensitivity at full resolution for beautiful night shots or dimly lit indoor shots.
Parallel processing has resulted in ultra high-speed start-up of approx. 1.1 seconds (may vary depending on the shooting conditions). The shutter release time lag is as short as approx. 0.005 second, making it easy to capture sudden, spur-of-the-moment photo opportunities.
- Intelligent Resolution
- Intelligent Resolution image processing technology is incorporated in the Venus Engine HD II for the DMC-ZR3. With the Intelligent Resolution technology, 3 areas -- outlines, detailed texture areas and soft gradation areas -- are automatically detected and optimum signal processes are performed to each area. Apart from the uniform enhancement of sharpness, the innovative technology Intelligent Resolution precisely performs signal processing pixel by pixel in the most effective way for it. As a result, images are naturally clear and crisp in both photo and movie recording. The Intelligent Resolution function turns on in iA Mode or in some Scene Modes. Intelligent Resolution can also be activated from the menu.
- Sonic Speed AF
- The Sonic Speed AF system in the DMC-ZR3 has a maximum speed using the 1-area AF of approx. 0.26 second (wide-end) / 0.31 second (tele-end) for auto focusing using 1-area AF. It includes numerous re-engineering enhancements, including a higher-speed actuator, optimized algorithms and parallel software processing. The result is fast and accurate AF performance. You can quickly get moving subjects in focus, such as when you're shooting sports scenes.
- Intelligent Auto Mode Helps Prevent Mis-Shots
- Panasonic's iA (Intelligent Auto) mode is a combination of functions that makes it easy for anyone to take beautiful photos. In iA mode the camera does all the work, activating Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), Intelligent ISO Control, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection, and Intelligent Exposure. This leaves the user free to simply compose the shot and press the shutter button, with the assurance that the image will be clear, beautiful and properly exposed.
The iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode is also available in motion image recording. The iA Mode automatically and simultaneously activates 4 advanced detection functions: The POWER O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) to detect hand-shake, the Face Detection AF/AE to detect faces in the frame, the Intelligent Scene Selector to detect scene conditions, and the Intelligent Exposure to detect the ambient light. Since the camera automatically optimizes the settings, it lets you shoot stunning HD movies every time.
- Advanced Face Detection With Face Recognition
- The ZR3 features Face Recognition, a function that "remembers" faces. When a familiar face is recorded several times, the camera will prompt you to register the face. Once complete, if the familiar face appears into your frame again, the camera will display the name you specified for that person and prioritize focus and exposure so that the registered face is bright and in sharp focus. During registration, you can change the icon that indicates when the registered subject is in focus. You can also specify the age of the registered subject and have both the name and the age of the subject stamped onto your photos. When babies under 3 years-old are registered, the camera will automatically switch to Baby mode if the baby appears into the frame. In playback, you can choose to display only photos that contain a specific registered face using Category Playback. You can also view image slideshows of only a selected person. Face recognition makes sorting archiving incredibly easy. This advanced face detection system also digitally corrects unwanted red-eye during recording.
- AF Tracking Function (Photo)
- With new AF Tracking function, the user can "lock" the focus onto a moving subject. The camera then automatically tracks the subject as it moves, keeping it in focus without the user having to hold the shutter button halfway down. This makes it easier to capture the perfect moment clearly and in sharp focus when shooting images of a child, pet, sports or any scene with moving subjects and spur-of-the-moment action.
- Quick AF
- The Quick AF system helps keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing the shutter button halfway. This improves the result out of a shutter chance because the focus is always near the subject and AF time is minimized. The number of metering points has also been increased from the previous 9 points to a more detailed 11 points.
- Intelligent ISO Control (Photo)
- Thanks to Intelligent ISO Control (IIC), the camera can determine whether or not the subject is moving. If it is moving, Intelligent ISO Control changes the ISO sensitivity and shutter speed accordingly. You get clear, beautiful shots with no motion blur even when photographing kids who won't stay still. If the subject is not moving, the ISO sensitivity is lowered to capture beautiful, natural-looking images.
- Intelligent Scene Selector (Photo and Movie)
- When the camera's in iA mode, the Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions and automatically selects either Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait, Night Scenery or Sunset mode accordingly. It makes several other advanced image settings too, so you're assured of getting beautiful results every time you shoot, no matter what the scene or subject.** With the Intelligent Scene Selector doing all the complicated work for you, you'll find photography easier than ever to enjoy.
You are naturally assumed to take the same subject in the same situation when you start recording movie while recording photos. So you do not have to set the Scene Mode again for movie recording once you are in the Scene Mode of photo recording. The result is a beautiful movie best optimized for the scene.
- Intelligent Exposure (Photo and Movie)
- With this feature, photos will no longer be under- or over-exposed. Instead, the ZR3 instantly analyzes the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark because of dim lighting, backlighting or the use of the flash. The camera will automatically adjust the brightness accordingly. Intelligent Exposure optimizes the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully. It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects the subject is in backlight.
- Digital Red-eye Correction (Photo)
- This feature helps to eliminate the red-eye problem that sometimes results when taking flash shots at the night. Incorporated into the built-in flash, the camera emits a small preliminary flash before the main flash, detects red-eye and will digitally correct it.
- Still Picture and Movie Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
- The DMC-ZR3 hybrid still/motion image camera includes numerous Scene Modes for taking movies. Switching from still-image to movie shooting is seamless because the optimal Movie Scene Mode is automatically selected. The versatile Scene Mode range is a unique Lumix feature that handles just about any situation and subject type. By simply selecting a Scene Mode, the camera makes the optimal settings for you automatically, so anybody can take superb photos and movies with ease.
Still Picture Scene Modes:
- Portrait Mode: This gives the background a soft focus while capturing the subject clearly and sharply.
- Soft Skin Mode The camera detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than portrait mode.
- Transform Mode: Lets you adjust the image from wide to slim in 5 steps. For example, you can make a tall tree look even taller, or get a more dynamic view of a large building. You can see the actual effect on the LCD while shooting, so you don't need to worry about shooting or framing mistakes.
- Self-portrait Mode: This mode makes it easy for you to take pictures of yourself.

You can also select High-speed Burst Mode or Flash Burst Mode from Scene Mode*. The DMC-ZR3 lets you choose Speed Priority or Image Priority. In Speed Priority Mode, it can fire off up to approximately 10 frames per second with 3-megapixel resolution, which is highly sufficient for photo prints. This is great for capturing fast-moving sports or racing scenes. You can take a series of shots, then choose the ones you like the best and delete the rest.
- 40 MB Built-in Memory
- Take photos even when you don't have an SDHC/SD Memory Card on hand. Just use the built-in memory, then copy the data to an SDHC/SD card or PC later. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like. In addition to providing extra memory when your memory card fills up, this is a great place to store your favorite photos so you can view them anytime you want.
- Large-Capacity, High-Speed Storage Media -- SD, SDHC and SDXC Memory Card
- The SD Memory Card, the ZR3's media for storing image data, offers both a large capacity and fast data transfer. The camera also accommodates large-capacity SDHC memory cards.
- Clipboard Function
- The Clipboard function is incredibly handy for the maps and time schedules that are so important when traveling. These documents are cumbersome to hold, but when stored in a bag, they can be difficult to find. By snapping photos of them and adding them to the clipboard, you can retrieve them instantly with the Mode Dial. Because it takes a little time to retrieve images from an SDHC/SD Memory card, the images are stored in their own special folders in the Built-in Memory. You can find them immediately. This lets the Clipboard work like a quick and easy memo function.
- Macro Zoom
- You can pull subjects even closer than the closest point possible with the wide-angle setting by using 3x digital zoom, and capture dramatic close-ups.
- Date Stamp
- You can print the date on your photos. In addition to the ordinary recording date, you can choose Baby or Pet mode from among the Scene Modes to automatically print the age of a child or pet by inputting the birthdate in advance, or use the Travel Date Setting to print which day of the trip each photo was taken on. These dates, which can be helpful when making a photo album, can be stamped on photos whether you print them yourself at home or have a photo shop do them.
- ISO Sensitivity Settings
- Adjust light-receiving sensitivity just like with a film camera. Available settings: Auto and ISO 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 equivalents (1600 - 6400 ISO equivalent in High Sensitivity Mode).
