- Leica DC Vario-Elmar Lens with 12x Optical Wide-Angle Zoom
- Leica Camera AG is a camera and lens maker lauded by photographers around the world. In every aspect of precision lens optics -- from polishing techniques to coating technologies to quality standards -- Leica Camera AG remains a world leader. Leica's multi-coating lens process for glare reduction helps to eliminate image fogging and ghosting when shooting in extremely bright light.
The ZS1 features a high-quality Leica DC Vario Elmar 25mm ultra-wide-angle lens with a 12x optical zoom. A lens like this, with a range from 25mm to 300mm in 35mm film equivalence, is almost inconceivable in such a small, lightweight camera. Comprising 10 elements in 8 groups, including 2 ED lenses and 2 aspherical lenses with 3 aspherical surfaces, and utilizing new lens material in its design, this advanced lens unit realizes the outstandingly slim and compact body while passing Leica's stringent standards to deliver exceptional optical performance.
- 21.4x Extended Optical Zoom
- The DMC-ZS1's 10x optical zoom combines with the 1/2.33" diagonal 10.1-megapixel effective CCD to give you enormous expressive power. The Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 21.4x power in photos at a resolution of 3 megapixels or less. Using this feature in combination with the 4x digital zoom brings the total zooming power to a remarkable 85.5x.
- 12x Optical/4x Digital/48x Combined Zoom/85.5x Combined With Extra Optical Zoom
- This Panasonic Lumix digital camera is equipped with a 12x optical zoom, capable of producing close-ups with amazing detail. There is even a 4x variable digital zoom*, which, combined with the optical zoom, digitally magnifies images up to 48 times their normal size.
- Large Bright 2.7-inch Color LCD Monitor With Auto Power LCD Function and High-Angle Mode
- The ZS1 is equipped with a 2.7-inch widescreen, 230,000-dot Intelligent LCD with high resolution and a wide viewing angle. The screen brightness automatically adjusts in 11 steps as the surrounding brightness level changes, ensuring easy visibility at all times. The big screen reflects fine details, making it easy to check the focus before shooting. It also serves as a small photo and video viewer, allowing the user and friends to enjoy viewing the still and motion images together.
Its large size lets everyone view the images together, and its crisp clarity is great for both shooting and playback. Under bright sunlight, the Auto Power LCD function increases the backlight brightness in nine steps according to the ambient light intensity. In dimly lit locations, it adjusts the frame rate of live images in two steps according to the ambient darkness. At the highest of these 11 steps, the LCD backlight becomes maximum 1.4 times brighter than normal. This makes both shooting and viewing photos easier and more convenient. The DMC-ZS1 also has a High-Angle shooting function, which makes it easier to check the LCD when you're holding the camera high to shoot over a crowd.
- MEGA Optical Image Stabilizer
- Especially important for a high zoom camera, Panasonic's advanced MEGA O.I.S. enhances the camera's telephoto zoom capabilities, helping to deliver sharp, vivid images even when taking handheld telephoto shots or shooting in low light. Panasonic drew on its cutting-edge lens technology to invent Mega O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer). It prevents blurring from shaky hands -- the leading cause of blurry images.
Featured in the entire Lumix line-up since 2005, MEGA O.I.S. has earned such high praise from users around the world that it is a standard feature of digital cameras. In Panasonic's Mega O.I.S., sensors act at a frequency of 4,000 times per second to accurately detect even slight camera movement, such as from unsteady hands, and a corrective lens in the O.I.S. lens unit is shifted to compensate. With Mega O.I.S., it is easier than ever to capture clear, sharp, beautiful images when shooting telephoto shots, indoor portraits, illuminated night scenes or even the scenery you see from a train window.
- 1/2.5" 10.1 Megapixel Effective CCD With Primary Color Filter
- The ZS1 features a 1/2.5-inch CCD with effective 10.1-megapixel resolution. The DMC-ZS1's Primary Color Filter uses the primary colors (red, green and blue) to ensure the correct extraction of color information from the CCD in order to create vivid, rich color images.
- Venus Engine IV LSI
- An image-processing engine, Venus Engine IV, uses advanced signal processing to give you beautiful images even when the sensitivity is high. Multi-task signal processing is employed for all images to enable high-speed, high-performance shooting. Venus Engine IV also effectively raises the precision of various functions, such as MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) and Intelligent ISO Control. Along with its extremely high performance, Venus Engine IV reduces power consumption thanks to a number of energy efficiency improvements.
Luminance noise and chromatic noise are reduced separately in the Venus Engine III. In addition, the Venus Engine IV enhances this detection by effectively reducing highly noticeable low-frequency chromatic noise in advance, while delicately applying noise reduction (NR) processing to detailed areas to prevent the color bleeding that often happens when NR is used. As a result, beautiful images with minimal noise can be reproduced all the way up to ISO 1600 high sensitivity at full resolution while color noise is less noticeable in shadows and other dark areas even when shooting with low sensitivity.
The DMC-ZS1 slashes the release time lag to around 0.005 second minimum*. This makes DMC-ZS1 an extremely quick, responsive camera. It lets you capture images comfortably even at a moment's notice and is a pleasure to use. The energy-saving Venus Engine IV image processing engine and an efficient, rechargeable lithium-ion battery work together to extend the shooting time of the DMC-ZS1, extending the battery life up to 320 shots (CIPA) per a single charge.
- WVGA Motion Images (848 x 480) with Audio
- The DMC-ZS1 can record motion images in WVGA (QuickTime Motion JPEG 848 x 480 pixels at 30 fps). The pixel mixed readout method enables bright motion-image recording even in low-light settings. Standard motion images can also be recorded in VGA (QuickTime Motion JPEG 640 x 480 pixels at 30 fps). In Motion Picture mode, the length of recording time depends on the capacity of the SDHC/SD Memory Card. (Up to the equivalent of 2 GB per motion-image recording.) When you set the motion picture quality to VGA 30fps and WVGA 30fps, it is recommended you use a high-speed memory card with '10MB/s' or greater on the package.
- Intelligent Auto Mode
- When you don't know which mode will give you the best shooting results, or when a sudden photo opportunity pops up and you don't have time to make any settings, simply choose iA (Intelligent Auto) Mode and let the camera do it all for you. This advanced mode includes MEGA O.I.S. to detect hand-shake, Intelligent ISO Control to detect subject movement, Face Detection AF/AE to detect faces in the frame, Intelligent Scene Selector to detect scene conditions, Intelligent Exposure to detect the brightness level and AF Tracking to continually track a moving subject and keep it in focus. These 6 functions work automatically and simultaneously in iA Mode to optimize your settings, making it easier than ever to take beautiful photos every time.
- Face Detection AF/AE
- The Face Detection function detects faces and automatically optimizes the focus and exposure settings. It prevents the blurry faces that happen when the camera focuses on something in front of or behind the subject, and keeps faces from appearing dark when shooting indoors or against the light source. It detects up to 15 faces at a time, making it extremely convenient for group photos. Once the camera detects a face, Face Tracking follows it even when the subject moves around. Plus, the system keeps on detection if a face turns sideways to the camera. The DMC-ZS1 is also equipped with Digital Red-eye Correction. The camera takes care of the red-eye effect that often happens when shooting with a flash, to ensure attractive facial expression always. Face Detection function is automatically turned on in iA Mode and can be turned on or off in Normal Picture Mode or some Scene Modes.
- AF Tracking
- Once you focus on your subject, AF Tracking automatically tracks it until you press the shutter. When you're taking pictures of an active subject, like children or pets, this function eliminates the need to press the shutter button halfway down repeatedly to readjust the focus. AF Tracking makes sure you don't miss those once-in-a-lifetime shooting opportunities.
- Quick AF
- The Quick AF system helps keep focus on the subject while the camera is in recording mode even before pressing the shutter button halfway. This improves the result out of a shutter chance because the focus is always near the subject and AF time is minimized.
- Intelligent ISO Control (IIC)
- While hand-shake is the single biggest cause of blurry images, it is not the only one. Another problem is the motion blur that can occur when a subject moves as the shot is being snapped. Incorporating Panasonic's Intelligent ISO Control, Lumix cameras were the first in the world to fight motion blur. With Intelligent Image Stabilization -- Mega O.I.S. to compensate for hand-shake plus Intelligent ISO Control to prevent motion blur -- Panasonic has equipped the new Lumix DMC-ZS1 with the industry's most advanced countermeasures against blurring.
The IIC system detects whether or not the subject is moving. If it is, the system automatically raises the ISO setting accordingly, allowing the camera to shoot at a higher shutter speed. If the subject is not moving, the camera shoots at a low ISO setting and captures beautiful, natural-looking images. Intelligent ISO Control is included as one of the corrections in certain scene modes used to shoot subjects that are often moving, such as Sports, Baby and the newly added Pet mode. Simply select the mode that best suits the subject, and Intelligent ISO Control provides the optimal corrections, making it easy to capture crisp, clear photos.
- Intelligent Exposure
- With this feature, photos will no longer be under- or over-exposed. Instead, the ZS1 instantly analyzes the framed image and adjusts the brightness in areas that are too dark because of dim lighting, backlighting or the use of the flash. The camera will automatically adjust the brightness accordingly. Intelligent Exposure optimizes the exposure for each part of an image, preventing blocked shadows and blown highlights and helping ensure that gradation and details are reproduced beautifully. It now features an automatic backlight compensation function that activates whenever the camera detects the subject is in backlight.
- Intelligent Scene Selector
- Intelligent Scene Selector senses the ambient conditions, recognizes the shooting environment and will automatically select the appropriate scene mode from: Scenery, Portrait, Macro, Night Portrait or Night Scenery mode. This intuitive technology, helps the user utilize the most common scene modes that are built into the camera, but often go unused, without making any manual adjustments.
- Auto Backlight Compensation
- When there is strong backlighting, the background appears nice and bright, but the subject is dark. This function detects backlight condition and compensates it automatically.
- Mode Dial With Rec/Playback Mode Switch
- The DMC-ZS1 incorporates a REC/PLAYBACK mode switch. Use the Mode Dial to choose the shooting mode, and use the new menu display to choose the playback mode. This helps the photographer to instantly switch between record and play modes, and to always know which mode the camera is in.
- Still Picture Scene Modes to Cover A Wide Variety of Shots
- Portrait Mode: This gives the background a soft focus while capturing the subject clearly and sharply.
- Soft Skin Mode The camera detects the face or skin area to achieve a smoother appearance of the skin than portrait mode.
- Transform Mode: Lets you adjust the image from wide to slim in 5 steps. For example, you can make a tall tree look even taller, or get a more dynamic view of a large building. You can see the actual effect on the LCD while shooting, so you don't need to worry about shooting or framing mistakes.
- Self-portrait Mode: This mode makes it easy for you to take pictures of yourself.
- Scenery Mode: Capture sweeping vistas in sharp focus.
- Panorama Assist Mode: A handy function for aligning panorama photos using the included Software Panorama Maker. The afterimage of each previous shot is displayed so you can use it to precisely line up the second and third shots.
- Sports Mode: Uses a high shutter speed to catch moving subjects.
- Night Portrait Mode: The MEGA O.I.S. minimizes hand motion at slow shutter speeds, to capture people and night landscapes clearly and beautifully.
- Night Scenery Mode: Allows you to record the nightscape vividly by reducing the shutter speed.
- Food Mode: Allows you to take pictures of food with a natural hue without being affected by the ambient light in restaurants etc.
- Party Mode: Select this mode when you want to take pictures at a wedding reception, indoor party etc. By using the flash and slowing down the shutter speed, both people and the background can be recorded with a brightness close to real life.
- Candle Light Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures with a candle-lit atmosphere. You can take successful pictures without using the flash.
- Baby1, Baby2 Modes: These modes take pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When the flash is used, the light from it is weaker than usual. You can set the birthdays of two babies (Baby1 and Baby2). The baby's age can then be displayed when playing back pictures.
- Pet Mode: Because pets often won't hold still, this mode switches the camera to Intelligent ISO Control, which prevents motion blur. If you input your pet's date of birth, its age in months (at the time a photo was taken) is displayed when you view photos.
- Sunset Mode: Emphasizing red tones, this mode is designed to capture clear, vivid shots of colorful sunsets.
- High Sensitivity Mode: Select this mode for high-sensitivity processing. You can take pictures at ISO 6400 sensitivity equivalent.
- Hi-speed Burst Mode: (Image Priority / Speed Priority) You can capture a crucial moment with perfect timing in 3-megapixel resolution (with an aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9), 2-megapixel resolution (16:9) or 2.5-megapixel resolution (3:2).
- Flash Burst Mode: Consecutive shooting [max. 5 images in 3-megapixel (4:3), 2.5-megapixel (3:2), 2-megapixel (16:9) recording] with continuous flash emission. It allows you to capture a crucial moment in the dark situation.
- Starry Sky Mode: By making the shutter speed slower, allows you to take vivid pictures of a starry sky or a dark subject that you could not take in Night Scenery.
- Fireworks Mode: his mode allows you to take beautiful pictures of fireworks exploding in the night sky.
- Beach Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures on a beach. It prevents under exposure of the subject due to strong sunlight.
- Snow Mode: This mode will adjust the white balance and the exposure to show the snow as white as possible.
- Aerial Photo Mode: This mode allows you to take pictures through an airplane window.
- Pin Hole Mode: Get shots that look like you used a pinhole camera.
- Film Grain Mode: Get shots that look like you used monochrome high-sensitivity film.
- Underwater Mode: This mode reduces excessive blue tone in underwater pictures.
- Continuous AF
- The Continuous AF (auto focus) system maintains focus on the subject even without pressing a shutter button halfway, thus minimizing the AF time.
- High-speed Burst Mode
- The DMC-ZS1 lets you choose Speed Priority or Image Priority. In Speed Priority Mode, it can fire off up to approximately 10 frames per second with 3-megapixel resolution, which is highly sufficient for photo prints. This is great for capturing fast-moving sports or racing scenes. You can take a series of shots, then choose the ones you like the best and delete the rest.
- Digital Red-eye Correction
- This feature helps to eliminate the red-eye problem that sometimes results when taking flash shots at the night. Incorporated into the built-in flash, the camera emits a small preliminary flash before the main flash, detects red-eye and will digitally correct it.
- Zoom Resume Function
- The Zoom Resume function lets you decide on your composition before you shoot, so you can be prepared for sudden opportunities like a grand opening event or a photo of birds in the wild. It stores the zoom position (magnification) in memory, so you can shoot with the same zoom setting once the power is turned on again. This helps to make sure you don't miss those great spur-of-the-moment shots.
- Two-Speed Zoom
- This function allows you to control the zoom operation in two speeds, Low and High, with the zoom lever. Rotate the lever a small amount for slow zooming, and a larger amount for high-speed zooming. This makes it easy to zoom in and out quickly when you need to, or to slow down for finer zooming control.
- Clipboard Function
- The Clipboard function is incredibly handy for the maps and time schedules that are so important when traveling. These documents are cumbersome to hold, but when stored in a bag, they can be difficult to find. By snapping photos of them and adding them to the clipboard, you can retrieve them instantly with the Mode Dial. Because it takes a little time to retrieve images from an SDHC/SD Memory card, the images are stored in their own special folders in the Built-in Memory. You can find them immediately. This lets the Clipboard work like a quick and easy memo function.
- 40 MB Built-in Memory
- Take photos even when you don't have an SDHC/SD Memory Card on hand. Just use the built-in memory, then copy the data to an SDHC/SD card or PC later. You can also copy images from a memory card or PC to the built-in memory, and view them on the LCD anytime you like. In addition to providing extra memory when your memory card fills up, this is a great place to store your favorite photos so you can view them anytime you want.
- Large-Capacity, High-Speed Storage Media -- SD and SDHC Memory Card
- The SD Memory Card, the ZS1's media for storing image data, offers both a large capacity and fast data transfer. The camera also accommodates large-capacity SDHC memory cards.
- Unlimited Consecutive Shooting
- Allows unlimited consecutive shooting at 2 fps up to the capacity of the SD Memory Card.
- Date Stamp
- You can print the date on your photos. In addition to the ordinary recording date, you can choose Baby or Pet mode from among the Scene Modes to automatically print the age of a child or pet by inputting the birthdate in advance, or use the Travel Date Setting to print which day of the trip each photo was taken on. These dates, which can be helpful when making a photo album, can be stamped on photos whether you print them yourself at home or have a photo shop do them.
- ISO Sensitivity Settings
- Adjust light-receiving sensitivity just like with a film camera. Available settings: Auto and ISO 80, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 and 3200 equivalents (1600 - 6400 ISO equivalent in High Sensitivity Mode).
- Built-in Digital Flash
- The ZS1 offers a number of flash modes, including Auto, Auto/Red-eye Reduction, Slow Sync./Red-eye Reduction for nighttime portraits, and Forced On/Off.
- White Balance Settings
- Choose from six white balance settings: Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Shade, Halogen and White Set. Manual white balance adjustment plus or minus 10 steps is also available.*
- Manual Exposure Compensation
- 1/3 EV steps up to ±2 EV
- Auto Exposure Bracketing
- Automatically shoot three frames with graduated exposure, one shot overexposed, one shot at correct exposure, one shot unedrexposed. Bracketing amount can be set for 1/3 to 1 EV steps.
- Real-Time Histograms
- The DMC-ZS1's histogram feature functions like a digital light meter, providing a graphic representation of the luminance level of the pixels composing an image. By using the histogram, users can exercise more precise exposure control for quality photos. The histogram can be displayed on the unit's large, 2-inch LCD screen while an image is being recorded and also after a shot has been taken.
