Panasonic VDR-D50 DVD Camcorder

Features in Detail | Recommended Accessories | Enlarged Image

The Panasonic VDR-D50 DVD camcorder captures crisp, high-resolution digital video on convenient 8cm DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs. This full-featured camcorder incorporates a powerful 42x optical zoom that allows you to be up close no matter how far way you may be. To steady shaky video, the VDR-D50 uses Optical Image Stabilization, which intuitively compensates for any hand movement, so that every shot if beautifully crisp and clear. The VDR-D50 features 16:9 widescreen format recording, and a widescreen 2.7" LCD. Among the other innovative features included on the VDR-D50 is the easy to use one-touch navigation. A convenient thumb wheel lets the user quickly access major functions such as JPEG playback, memory card recording and DVD recording while a new joystick allows easy navigation of the controls using the thumb only.

The VDR-D50 was developed to maximize the quality of the video recording by concentrating on those features that you will use most often. One such feature is the image-enhancing MagicPix that creates rich videos under low-light conditions. A digital still camera feature can be used to snap still images and save them to an SD Memory Card, while USB capability provides a convenient way to transfer digital video and still images to a PC for archiving, e-mailing and more.

DVD Palmcorder Camcorder
No Stress, No Mistakes. Panasonic DVD Palmcorder camcorders automatically find a blank section on the disc for recording. You never need to search for blank disc space and there's no need to worry about recording over a previous recording. The index screen makes it easy to search for a particular scene. You can view, delete and edit quickly and easily. When you finish shooting, just take the disc from the DVD Palmcorder camcorder and slip it right into your DVD player or recorder. There's no need to connect any cables and you can start viewing right away.
Multi-Format Recording -- DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R or DVD-R DL
Panasonic DVD camcorders can record and play 8cm DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, DVD-R DL and DVD-R discs. With the DVD-RAM disc, you can record again and again on the same disc, up to tens of thousand times, and view it without any finalising process. You can record repeatedly on DVD-RW discs as well, and they are well suited to editing. While you can record only once on DVD-R DL and DVD-R discs, they can be played back on almost any kind of DVD player or recorder. With DVD camcorder's wide compatibility, you can record on whichever kind of disc works best in your DVD player or recorder.
42x Hi-Definition Zoom/2000x Digital Zoom
The Panasonic VDR-D50 DVD camcorder comes with a lens capable of a 42:1 optical zoom. The 42x zoom can fill the screen with even a distant subject. This powerful feature acts like a telescope to produce close-up shots with extraordinary clarity, so you won't miss a single detail. It also offers variable zoom speeds, so you can zoom in for close-ups, or zoom out for wide angle shots, using any of seven different zoom speeds. This lens is not only the powerful zoom offered in a home-use digital camcorder, it also features low distortion. And because it's optical, there is no quality loss -- you get the images in all their natural beauty.

Through the use of digital technology, the zoom ratio can be increased to 2000:1*, producing an incredibly close shot.

* As digital magnification increases, resolution significantly decreases.

Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer)
This 42x zoom lens has the power you need to take dramatic closeups or get remarkable shots of even distant subjects. But with long-distance zoom shots, even a tiny bit of hand shake has a huge effect on picture quality. That's where image stabilization comes in. Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilization) shifts a corrective lens as you shoot to eliminate the effects of hand shake, so you get clear, sharp, blur-free shots even at high zoom levels. It's an essential feature for getting the most out of this incredible zoom lens. Panasonic's Advanced O.I.S. is a new image stabilizing function that achieves around eight times higher precision than their previous system. The system uses gyro-sensors to detect handshake, then shifts a lens and adjusts its optical axis to compensate. Advanced O.I.S. enables finer, more effective hand-shake compensation.
Built-in SD / SDHC Memory Card Drive
SD memory cards are incredibly versatile, holding vast amounts of information and are about the size of a postage stamp. That's why they're revolutionizing the way people enjoy audio, video and information content. In fact, SD memory cards are used in a wide range of products, including A/V equipment, PCs, cellular phones, PDAs and other communication devices. And you'll be able to enjoy this amazing technology as most Panasonic Digital Palmcorders boast SD card slots, opening up a wealth of networking possibilities.

Thanks to the SD card slot, you can actually use your camcorder as an external SD storage drive. PC connection cable and driver software are included with the VDR-D50. Using the included USB cable, transfer photos, data motion files or even motion images back and forth between the camcorder and your PC.

Panasonic MPEG2 Engine
The Panasonic MPEG2 engine is a wide-range, high-precision search engine that produces smooth, beautiful moving pictures. Because it records the differences in each frame, it can render fast, complex motions -- like those of children in the thick of the action -- with exceptional precision. The MPEG2 engine also uses the Variable Bit Rate system that Panasonic adopted for their high-end DIGA DVD recorder. LP (Long Play) mode now offers nearly twice the resolution of previous MPEG2 recording video cameras, giving you the best possible resolution at the longest recording times.
Pure Color Engine
The Pure Color Engine converts the CCD output signal from a complementary color signal into an RGB signal at an early stage and extracts the low-frequency luminance component from the RGB signal. This innovative engine also achieves truly superb color reproduction for high-zoomed pictures.
High-Picture-Quality 16:9 Wide Mode
The VDR-D50 offers the High-Picture-Quality Wide Mode, which produces images that make for beautiful, dramatic viewing on a wide-screen TV. The image is processed on 16:9 area of the CCD. Because the image decoded has the same proportions as your wide-screen TV, there is virtually no picture quality degradation. You get beautiful images and all the excitement and dynamism on either a wide 16:9 screen TV or a conventional 4:3 TV.
2.7" Diagonal Widescreen Color LCD Monitor and Color Viewfinder
The VDR-D50 features a wide 2.7-inch LCD, making it easier to frame shots when you're shooting in 16:9 mode. You can enjoy shooting wide, and viewing wide.
Variable Bit Rate XP, SP and LP Recording Modes
This unit records in VBR -- Variable Bit Rate. VBR recording automatically varies the bit rate (amount of data in a fixed time) depending on the subject being recorded. This means if a subject with sharp movements is recorded, the recording time is reduced.
Recording Mode: XP (10Mbps) SP (5Mbps) LP (2.5Mbps)
DVD-RAM (dual-sided) 36 min. 74 min. 150 min.
DVD-RW (dual-sided) 36 min. 74 min. 150 min.
DVD-R DL (dual-layer) 35 min. 69 min. 138 min.
DVD-R (single-sided) 18 min. 37 min. 75 min.
One-Touch Navigation and Joy Stick Control
With One-Touch Navigation, just press the center of the joystick to display an operating menu. The operations you use most often are right on the monitor, so it's easy to change settings or operate the camera without looking away from your subject. The joystick makes the camera much easier to use, letting you control all basic operations with one hand.
Help Mode
Not sure what a certain icon means? Just switch on the Help mode and select the icon. It's explained for you on the LCD monitor. This makes it easier to learn the icons, and you spend less time reading the operating manual.
USB 2.0 High Speed Connection
This convenient feature allows you to link the camcorder to your computer via the USB port. Then, you can easily transfer still images captured on Mini DV tape to your computer for use in e-mail or printed documents. The VDR-D50 supports USB 2.0 High Speed enabling real time video transfers.
PhotoShot™ Built-in Digital Still Camera
Sometimes a still image is the best way to capture a magical memory. Whether it's the fleeting glimpse of a loved one's smile or a spectacular vacation view, a still image can speak volumes. That's why the VDR-D50 Panasonic Digital Palmcorder MultiCam Camcorder is equipped with a Photoshot built-in digital still camera. So, whether you're saving vintage video or sharing spectacular stills over the Web, you'll be ready.
PictBridge Direct Print Compatibility
The PictBridge standard lets you print directly on a compatible digital printer. Print size, layout, date and other settings can be made with the camera.
Easy In-Camera Editing With Disc Navigator
You can do some polished editing using just the camera itself*. It's easy to change the sequence of the scenes you've recorded to create your own scenarios, and then play them back. (You can record up to 99 sequencing patterns on each side of the disc for easy playback.) It's easy to delete the scenes you don't want right on the spot and to save the ones you do. You can also split up motion pictures and delete only parts of them.

* Playlist editing and playback can be done only with scenes on the same side of the disc.
Quick Search and Access With Disc Navigator
Unlike videotape, you don't need to rewind or fast-forward to search for specific scenes. The camcorder LCD screen displays a list of the recorded scenes for quick and easy searching.
MagicPix™ Images
This feature is a great way to record still images even in low-light settings. Now you can capture still images in full color onto the MiniDV tape and save priceless memories like a sleeping baby or a moonlit vacation night.
High-Speed Dubbing With A Panasonic DIGA DVD Recorder
With DVD's high-speed data transfer, you can dub your recordings -- even large volumes -- quickly and easily onto a DVD video recorder's hard disk drive. Enjoy sophisticated editing with the DVD recorder, or save your recordings onto DVD and create a collection of your own DVDs.
Included VideoCam Suite Editing Software
VideoCam Suite editing software is just the tool you need to make polished, smartly finished productions. It lets you load images into your PC for putting scenes in a different order and delete the ones you don't want with simple operation. When you're finished with your video production, you can use VideoCam Suite to reserve the edited version onto a DVD disc.
Stereo Zoom Mic With Wind Noise Reduction
As you zoom in on the picture, the audio will also zoom in so that you can pinpoint distant sound emanating from your subject.
