Panasonic DVD Recorders Feature Explanations:

1 - Audio/Video Recording to DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW Discs
These unique recorders allow you to digitally record high-quality, MPEG2 video on DVD-RAM or DVD-R media. They are engineered to take full advantage of the DVD-RAM format's capabilities, such as simultaneous playback and recording. DVD-RAM provides a single format for computer and video-based applications. With its vast storage capacity, incredible speed, memory, exceptional picture and sound quality, and writing/erasing/rewriting capability, DVD-RAM is highly adaptive to the expanding digital media environment.

You can record favorite video recordings onto removable DVD-RAM discs and instantly access favorite scenes without searching, fast-forwarding or rewinding. As an optical media format, DVD-RAM enjoys huge advantages over tape media, including random access, extraordinary picture quality, and multiple disc (DVD/CD) playback compatibility. And unlike tape, the format boasts superior rewritability, allowing you to rewrite to each disc thousands of times. These recorders have a super-fast data transfer rate of 22.16 Mbps, thereby making simultaneous recording and playback possible.

Panasonic DVD-RAM Recorders can also record onto DVD-R discs, so you can enjoy playback of these recordings on most conventional DVD players. These new models have added DVD-RW (video format), DVD+R and DVD+RW recording for enhanced compatibility with personal computers and DVD players. With expanded multi-format recording and playback capability, they let you enjoy all your DVDs, no matter which format you choose.

DVD-R discs may not be able to play on some DVD players, depending on the player, the DVD-R disc and the condition of the recording.

2 - Accutune Digital Tuner
Select Panasonic DVD recorders feature Accutune high-precision digital tuners for recording and viewing digital broadcasts without a set-top box. The built-in Digital Tuner will also allow the user to record one digital broadcast program while watching a second program and to record digital content in a secondary room where they might not have a set-top box. Accutune Digital Tuner future-proofs analog television owners from any trauma associated with FCC mandates for the termination of analog broadcasting. No matter where in the country they live, whether the transition to digital happens early or right on the February 2009 deadline, owners of Panasonic Accutune DVD recorders will be able to go on watching and recording all their favorite programs without investing in a new TV or trying to find a suitable converter for their old one.

The DMR-EA18 and DMR-EA38V have analog tuners only.

3 - SD/SDHC Card Slot and USB terminal With Photo Storage and JPEG Viewer
These Panasonic DVD recorders are each equipped with an SD Memory Card slot and USB terminal, which makes it easy to view photos from your digital camera. Just slip the SD card into the slot or use the cable to connect the camera to the USB terminal, and you're ready to enjoy a spectacular big-screen slideshow with family and friends. You can even listen to music recorded onto a USB device while viewing your photos.
4 - High Definition (1080p) Up-Conversion with HDMI
When connected to an HDMI-compatible TV via an HDMI cable, select DVD recorders can up-convert the DVD content that you're watching to 1080p resolution so you can enjoy beautiful, high-quality imagery in full high definition.
5 - 4-Head Hi-Fi VHS VCR
The Panasonic DMR-E75V, DMR-E45V and DMR-E35V are dual deck DVD video recorder/VHS recorders, combining the features and benefits of the two technologies. Keep your VHS tapes while adding DVDs to your home video collection. The dual deck units also give users the ability to easily dub their home movies and recorded VHS tapes onto either a DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc, and from a DVD disc back to a VHS tape.
6 - One-Touch Two-Way Transfer DVD-VHS
Simply press a button and transfer material from a VHS tape to a DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc or vice versa. This means you can easily record your entire video library to DVD for a collection that takes up far less space. During tape-to-DVD transfer, there's also a handy function that reads recording start (VISS) signals on the tape and automatically creates a program list on the DVD-RAM disc.
7 - 2X Virtual Multi-Encode for LP Mode
Improved horizontal resolution in LP (4-hour) recording mode renders images twice as sharp as previous years' models, delivering up to 500 lines. The Virtual Multi Encode System enables LP mode recording with the same 500 lines (DI) of horizontal resolution as that in the SP and XP modes. This is double the horizontal resolution compared to the 250 lines (1/2 DI) of conventional LP mode recording. Thanks to this, you can enjoy viewing extended recordings -- 4 hours for single-sided DVD-RAM/R; / 8 hours for double-sided DVD-RAM -- with exceptionally detailed images and twice the picture quality of previous models. The Virtual Multi Encode System achieves this by virtually encoding multiple aspects of a scene, such as detail and movement, while selecting the encoding system that assures optimum picture quality.
8 - Viera Link™ HDAVI Control
Connect your Panasonic DVD recorder to your Viera flat-panel HDTV via an HDMI cable, and the TV channel setting information is automatically downloaded to the recorder. Once the Auto Preset Download is complete, the DVD recorder will keep whichever TV channel you're watching as its receiving channel. This means you can record the program you're watching by just pressing the Record button on the Viera remote. With VieraLink™, you don't have to worry about setting the recorder to the right channel every time you want to record something.
9 - DV Input With DV Auto Recording and Automatic Playlist Creation
The IEEE 1394 DV input terminal allows you to connect a compatible digital camcorder to the DVD recorder and transfer your home movies onto the hard disk or a DVD-RAM/ DVD-R disc. To make it easier to navigate through the digital camcorder recordings that you transferred to the DVD recorder (hard disk or DVD-RAM/DVD-R disc), the DV Auto Record feature automatically generates a playlist for these transferred recordings by creating a new chapter for every instance of stop or pause used in the original recording. Once the playlist has been created, you can easily change the order and duration of the chapters, create new ones, and delete the ones you don't want using the on-screen menu.

IEEE 1394 cable is required.

10 - Time Slip Playback Functions
  • Chasing Playback -- This innovative feature lets you view a program that you're currently recording from any point that's already been recorded, while continuing to record the live program in progress. So, you no longer have to wait for the entire program to be recorded before watching it from beginning to end.
  • Simultaneous Recording and Playback -- Because data transfer is at a super-fast rate of 22.16Mbps, simultaneous recording and playback are possible with these recorders. So, you can record a live TV program while watching any other program that's been previously recorded on the same disc!
11 - Selectable Recording Modes
You can set these DVD recorders to a variety of recording modes, each depending on average bit rate. EP mode yields the most recording time, LP and SP mode provide less recording time with higher quality recording, and XP mode gives you the highest quality recording.

This years' models feature Extended Recording Time. In EP mode, they can record up to 8 hours on a single-sided 4.7GB DVD-RAM or DVD-R disc, and up to 16 hours on a double-sided 9.4GB DVD-RAM disc!

12 - Flexible Recording
In addition to the above modes, the FR (flexible recording) mode determines the most appropriate bit rate to fit a user-specified time slot (60 to 360 minutes) for timer recording. Flexible Recording starts before the recording commences, by determining the recording time and the disc's available storage space automatically, so you don't have to worry about you recordings being interrupted.
13 - Direct Navigator
Finding and viewing recorded material is fast and easy with these units' Direct Navigator function, which makes it easy to find a desired program from among several recorded on a disc. A list of recording dates, times, channels and (user-entered) titles is shown on-screen. When the user moves the cursor to any particular recording, that segment is played as motion video in the background. When you move the cursor to any particular recording, the segment is played in the background, so playback can begin immediately upon selection. Program deletion, protection, and title input are also easy to perform. Up to 99 programs can be handled at once.
14 - Play List Function
Lets the user perform non-linear video editing and create custom play lists of favorite scenes on a disc. The user can mark the cut-in and cut-out points for up to 999 desired scenes. These are displayed as thumbnail images on-screen, allowing the user to create a playlist. Multiple playlists (up to 99) can be stored in memory, so the same disc can be used to create up to 99 different scenarios. This function is also convenient for jumping directly to particular scenes. Because the order of scenes can be changed at will, and unwanted scenes can be cut, the user can perform simple editing of home video recordings or create original personal "programs" such as sports event highlights.
15 - Rapid Random Access; Easy Video Editing
Say goodbye to the rewind/fastforward shuffle. Unlike videotapes, DVD-RAM discs let you jump directly to any spot on a disc and begin playback or recording right away. Even if there is no sequential area of empty space available, these DVD Video Recorders can record data on the available space throughout the rest of the disc. There's no more wasted time finding a place to start recording, or the problem of accidentally recording over desired material.
16 - Advanced MPEG2 Encoding Using Hybrid VBR (Variable Bit Rate) Technology
Panasonic has combined two encoding technologies -- Real time VBR and Visibility Modulation Technology -- to provide MPEG2 recording with superb picture quality. Here's how it works: Real Time VBR adjusts the bit rate according to video signal complexity, in order to optimize the compression ratio. At the same time, Visibility Modulation Technology reduces compression for the most noticeable parts of each signal while it filters out unimportant data to raise compression in other areas. This combination helps assure incredible picture quality for your preferred DVD-RAM recording mode.
17 - Improved Video Quality in Analog-to-Digital Transfer
Input TBC, 3D Y/C separation circuitry, and 3D digital noise reduction are particularly effective when recording from analog video sources such as conventional VHS or S-VHS VCRs. Input TBC is a built-in time base corrector that delivers highly stable, natural images. The 3D Y/C Separation Circuitry minimizes the dot crawl and color smearing caused by interference between the video signal's Y and C color subcomponents. And, 3D Digital Noise Reduction effectively removes noise components from the signal during playback.
18 - Dolby Digital (Dolby AC-3) 2ch Audio Recording
A 20-bit AD Converter and an original Panasonic LSI chip enable Dolby Digital 2-channel recording for a new level of audio quality. Improves sound quality during transfer of images from video tapes to the DVD-RAM disk.
19 - Bilingual Recording (DVD-RAM only)
With the main and sub audio channels of sound multiplex broadcasting programs can be recorded.
20 - Super Multi-Format Playback
Incredibly versatile and format friendly, these DVD recorders can play back just about any DVD you can throw at them. Specifically, they can play back DVD-R/-RW/-RAM/+R/+RW discs. They can also play back many more disc formats, including: DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, DVD-R (dual layer), DVD+R (dual layer), CD, CD-DA, and CD-R/RW (including MP3 and JPEG files). With a Panasonic DVD recorder, never think twice about what disc you need.
21 - Progressive Scanning Output for Outstanding Reproduction (Playback)
Progressive scanning doubles the scan lines of an interlaced signal (from 480i to 480p) by scanning all 525 lines in 1/60 of a second for each pass. The higher-density video signal creates film-like DVD images extraordinarily close to the way they originally appeared in the cinema - with rich detail, extraordinary depth of field, and precise color reproduction. With the rising popularity of high definition televisions and their ability to accept and reproduce a progressive scan DVD picture, Panasonic's new and expanded line of DVD progressive players are positioned to take full advantage of this growing format.
22 - QuickView (x1.3)
Panasonic DVD Recorders are able to play back at 1.3 times the normal speed*, complete with sound, so you can quickly check the contents of a recorded program when you don't have time to watch it at normal speed. This feature can even be used during Chasing Playback.**

* Cannot be used with programs recorded in the linear PCM format or with DVD-R or DVD-Video discs.
**Cannot be used when recording in XP or FP modes.

23 - CD-R/CD-RW and MP3 Playback
You can enjoy listening to CDs that you make, since Panasonic DVD recorders enable playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs. They can also play MP3 files recorded onto CD-R/RW formatted discs. Use the Audio Navigation Menu to view and quickly search these MP3 files on screen.
24 - Component Video Out Switchable (480P/480I)
A picture-enhancing advancement in DVD-Video technology. It keeps the black and white, red, and blue signals of the video image intact (and separate) during transmission, to maintain incredibly high picture quality. Thanks to component video out, these DVD players produce images with higher resolution and more accurate colors than conventional DVD-Video players.
25 - Optical Digital Output for dts and Dolby Digital Decoders
These Panasonic DVD players are equipped with dts and Dolby Digital out. When connected to an optional decoder, you can enjoy the amazing 5.1 channel digital surround sound offered by dts and Dolby Digital encoded discs on your DVD player.
26 - Easy to Operate Remote Control
The large cursors make DVD software menu operation incredibly simple. Better still, often-used keys are laid out around the cursors, so you can perform more operations with a single finger.
27 - DivX Playback
DivX Video On Demand is a digital video delivery service that lets you rent or purchase DivX movies from any DivX licensed VOD partner. These movies are encoded in the DivX format to offer you superior quality video and the fastest download times.
